Be it known that I, ARKLEss D. WEIss, a citizen of theUnited States, residingat \Vilkes- Barr, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-W'ashers, of

which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in washing-boilers and it consists in a novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts, all as more fully hereinai'ter described.

clothes be'ing accomplished principally by the circulation of steam. Such a boiler is very convenient as a washer, for the reason that there is little Weight to handle. It is also economicai and rapid because the water reaches the boiling point in a few minutes.

My improved washing apparatus is preferably made separate from the boiler proper so that the latter may be used without it for other purposes if desired.

In the drawings 1 indicates the boiler proper and 2 indicates the inner vessel, which I'shall call the steamer, in which the clothes rest. The vessel 2, as above stated, might be connectedpermanently to the boiler, but I prefer to provide it with a support in the form of a skirt 3 somewhat deeper than the steamer 2 and surrounding it and attached to it at its upper edge. The sides of the steamer 2 are sloped inward so as to leave a space 4 between it and the skirt. The bottom 5 of the steamer, which is preferably V- shaped, does not quite reach to the bottom of the boiler,1eaving a space 6 below it. supports a stand-pipe 9 centerally. Between the bottom 5 and the dividing plate 8 is a' space 10 which is in communication with the stand-pipe 9. The stand-pipe extends about three-fourths of the distance to the top of the boiler and is perforated near its top to permit steam and water to escape and niingle with the clothing which is being washed. The steamer 2 is provided with two series of perforations, one series 11 near its upper edge and another series 12 in the bottom 5.

Resting upon the bottom 5 at its junction with the sides of the vessel 2 is a removable bottom 13 forming a support for the clothes having perforations 14 and alifting handle or ring 15. Between the plate 13 and the V- shaped bottom 5 is a considerable space 16.

For relieving the pressure within I provide the boiler lid 17 with a series of perforations 18 and asliding plate or Valve 19 having similar perforations and sliding in flanges which hold it close to the lid.

In operation the boiler is filled with water about to the depth of the dividing plate 8 and the clothes after being soaked a few minutes in cold water are placed within the steamer 2 upon the perforated bottom 13 and around the stand-pipe 9. The boiler is then placed on the fire and on account of the Small amount of water it commences to boil almost immediately. Steam forms in the space 4: and passes into the body of the clothes through the openings 11. It also forms in the space 16 beneath the perforated bottom and passes up through the openings 14. In the space 10 both steam and water will collect and the pressure of the steam will drive more or less water up through the stand-pipe 9. A considerable portion of steam will also pass out of the perforations in the stand pipe directly into the mass of clothes being washed.

I have found that by the use of my improved steam washer the clothes can be cleansed very rapidly and thoroughly.
