Description

(No Medel.)
H. OGBORN.
Washing Machine. Y l No. 230,714. Patented Aug. 3,1880.
u UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRISON OGBORN, OF RICHMOND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF O F HIS RIGHT TO SAMUEL WATSON, OF DUBLIN, INDIANA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,714, dated August 3, 1880.
Application tiled June 24, 1880.
To all -whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRISON OGBoRN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Wayne and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boiler Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following' to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication, and in which- Figure l represents a longitudinal vertical section of my improved boiler; Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section of the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in boiler washing-machines, havingforits object the subjection ofthe clothes to be washed toV tine streams of wate'r or other iiuids While the same are being held up out ofthe water in a steam-bath; and. to this end the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as Will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and mode of operation.
In the drawings, A represents a vessel of rectangular shape, and in constructionsimilar to the ordinary stove wash-boiler, and B a slotted or perforated cylinder suspended in bearings a a, and so that its lower side will always be above the water-line in the boiler, as clearly shown by dotted lines, Fig. 2. One of the journals, b, of said cylinderis made hol- 40 low for the reception of one end of a crank,G,
which passes through an opening in one end of the boiler, for the purpose of revolving said cylinder.
D represents the cover of the boiler, provided on its under side with a broad and thin flat reservoir, E, havingon its under side a long perforated trough or receptacle, F. The lid or cover D is provided with afunnel, d, in its top, for the introduction of the water or other (No model.)
washing-fluids, and which can be closed by a' 5o cork orother suitable device.
c represents a hole or opening through the bottom of the reservoir E, for the passage of the water or other uids to the trough or receptacle, which has a series of perforations through one or both sides thereof, for producing a tine stream, that falls down onto the clothes placed in the cylinder or receptacle B. The opening e is controlled by a stop-valve, e', which is raised and lowered or adjusted ver- 6o tically by a th umh-screw, d, that screws onto the upper end of the valve-stem d', passing up through the reservoir and top of the cover.
The cylinder is provided with ahinged cover,
b', for the purpose of placing the clothes to be 65 washed therein, and the vessel is provided at one end and near the bottom with a stop-cock,
a', for drawing off the water, so that it will never get above the water-line.
The operation of my improved apparatus is 7o as follows: The' clothes to be cleaned, being previously soaked in warm water and soap rubbed into the parts most soiled, are placed into the cylinder B. A small quant-ity of water is then put into the vesselA, but not enough to reach up to the cylinder. The cover D is then placed on the vessel, and the reservoirE filled with clean soapsuds or water, and the opening' or outlet through the bottom thereof closed by the valve c', through the medium ofthe 8o' thumb-screw d. The boiler is now placed on the stove over the tire, and as soon as the boiler is full of steam the valve c is adjusted by the thumb-screw, so as to allow the hot water in the reservoir, which has been heated by the steam and heat in the boiler, to ilow into the perforated trough on the under side of the reservoir, and thence down in a tine stream upon and through the clothes, the cylinder being turnedevery few minutes in order to change the po- 9o sition of the clothes; and after a short time the clothes are taken out, and they will 'present the same condition as if they had been through the ordinary mode of washing in two Waters and subsequently boiled.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the vessel A, of' au interior receptacle for holding' the clothes above the water, an interior reservoir arranged above said receptacle for containing` elean Wateror other washing-fluids, and a perforated trough arranged un d er said reservoir and above the elo tiles-receptacle, whereby the Clothes are subjected to a steam bath out ofthe Water in said vessel, and the Clean water or other Washing-tinids in said reservoir heated and permitted to drop in a fine stream upon and through the clothes, substantially in the manner herein shown and deseribed.
2. rlhe combination, with the vessel A, of an interior slotted revolving` cylinder, B, cover D, provided with reservoir E, and the perforated trough or reeeptaele F, arranged under said reservoir, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination, with the vessel A, having an interior receptacle for holding' the clothes above the water, of a cover, D, provided with a reservoir, E, on its under side,
itting inside of said vessel, having a hole or opening' through its bottom, an adjustable valve, c', for controlling said opening, and a perforated trough or receptacle, F, connected to the under side thereof, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
4. The*herein-described boiler Washing-maehine, consisting ot' vessel A, having stop-cock a', interior revolvintg` cylinder, B, arranged above the Water-line ot' said vessel, cover D, havin 5;' a reservoir onits under side provided with opening e, valve and valve-stem e' d', thumbserew f1, and perforated trough or receptacle F, connected to and arranged under said reservoir, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
ln testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence ot' two Witnesses.
