Description
J. C. NOBLES.
Improvement in Steam Wash-Boilers.
N0. 132,918. Patented Nov.12,1872.
AM FHGTO-UTHUGI'MFHIC C(lMY/OSBORNEZS PROCESS) JOHN G. NOBLES, OF
LAWRENCE, KANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM WASH=BCILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l32,9l, dated November 12, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. NOBLEs, of Lawrence, in the county of Douglass and State of Kansas, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Steam WashBoil- .ers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to letters and figures of reference marked thereric, expanding the fiber and interstices of the same, thereby loosening the particles of dirt, and immediately followed'by a thorough saturating and rinsing of the fabric with boiling water. Both of these operations are accomplished by means of devices shown by the accompanying drawing, and more fully described in the following specification, wherem- A represents a common wash-boiler; B, a rim or flange extending around the edge of the same, and forming a ledge projecting inward from the sides of the boiler to a proper depth; 0, a cover, which may be made a little less in size than the edge or flange on the boiler so that it will pass through it easily; D, the packing, which may be of any suitable material, properly attached to or near the edge of the cover and extending beyond the same, in the manner shown; E, a clothesholder, made of wire, perforated tin, or other material, supported by legs, or by projections from the sides of the boiler. The clothesholder may be made to stand above or below the water-level, (I prefer above.) It is made of wire or perforated tin in order that the steam may have direct access to the clothes and for the free escape of the water. It should be made less in size than the boiler, leaving space between it (the boiler) and the clothes-holder through which the water may flow unobstructed. F F represent buttons or fastenings, which hold the cover up against the under side of the rim until sufficient steam is generated, which, by its own pressure against the cover, closes the joint perfectly; G, a steam-valve so constructed as to regulate the pressure of steam and accomplish the double purpose of producing a proper application of steam and water to the articles to be cleansed, and to render the boiler safe from explosion.
The main object contemplated by these devices is to produce a cheap and useful article whereby the prudent housewife may do the washing in the shortest time, with the least expense, and in the easiest and most thorough manner possible.
I am aware that other inventions accomplish, with more or less facility, the same general purpose; but I am not aware that the devices for which I ask Letters Patent, or their equivalents, are known, or that the same object is accomplished as thoroughly and cheaply by other appliances.
It will be seen that, in an air or steam tight vessel of this kind, furnished with a holder, as described, articles of fo0dsuch as meats, vegetables, &c., may be cooked by steam; and that a wash-boiler thus constructed may be used for culinary purposes.
Having fully set forth my invention, what I claim is- 1. A lid, with suitable packing, so arranged as to fit the under side of the flange inside the boiler, and held there by steam pressure, thus forming a steam-tight joint, as and for the purposes specified.
2. The steam-valve in combination with the cover-joint and clothes-holder, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
. JOHN C. NOBLES. Witnesses:
J. L. ROBERTS, G. G. BAKER.
