ALBERT A. POTTERF, OF KANSAS GITY, MISSOURI.
WASHIBOILER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedMar. 2, 1915.
Application filed December 7, 1914. Serial No. 875,871.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT A. Former, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Washboilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wash boilers.
It relates particularly to the type of wash boilers provided with a pressure chamber from which water is projected by steam pressure into the upper portion of the boiler upon the clothes therein contained.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a boiler of this type which is of simple construction, which may be readily cleaned, and which will be eflicient in operation.
A further object of my invention is to provide novel means by which the water utilized for washing the clothes will be automatically filtered and freed from dirt prior to its being discharged upon the clothes contained in the boiler.
Other novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a topview of my improved boiler. Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the different views.
1 designates the body of the boiler, which may be of any suitable shape, and which has mounted in it an inverted pan-shaped bottom member 2, the top of which is provided with one or more upwardly extending annular flanges 3, which are externally screwthreaded and have detachably respectively fitted thereto inverted cup-shaped members 4. The upper end of each cup-shaped member 4 is provided with one or more discharge openings 5. Upwardly and outwardly in clined discharge openings 6 may also be provided in the side wall of each member 4 above the flange 3. The top of the member 2 within those portions encircled by the flanges 3 are provided each with one or more discharge openings 7. Filtering material 8 is provided in the members 4.
Two T-shaped discharge conductors have their lower ends 9 respectively detachably fitted in two vertical screw-threaded holes provided in the top of the member 2 adjacent to the ends thereof. The horizontal portion 10 of each of said T-shaped members, on its inner side is provided withdischarge openings 11. The top of the member 2 is provided with a downwardly extending tubular portion 12 having a perforated bottom 13. Contained in the tubular portion 12 is filtering material 14, which is releasably held therein by means of a horizontally slidable perforated removable cover 15, which is slidably mounted in grooves provided below two parallel flanges 16, with which the upper side of the member 2 is provided. To the top of the member 2 is secured a handle 17 by means of which the false bottom member 2 may be removed from the boiler body 1.
In the operation of my invention, water having been placed in the boiler and the clothes to be washed disposed in the washing chamber, which is that portion above the false bottom member 2, the water is heated to a boiling temperature, thereby creating steam and forming a pressure in the pressure chamber, which is that portion embraced by the bottom member 2. The pressure formed in the pressure chamber will force the water therefrom upwardly out of the T-shaped conductors 9-10 and upon the clothes, the density with which the filtering material 8 is packed in the cup-v shaped members 4 permitting of an accumulation of pressure sufficient to cause the water to be projected from the openings 11 with considerable force. Water will also be discharged, as will some of the steam through the discharge openings 5 and 6 in the members 4. The dirty water from the washing chamber will return to the pressure chamber through the perforated cover 15, filtering material 14, and perforated bottom 13. Most of the dirt will be eliminated from thereturn water and will be held by the filtering material 14. Any dirty water passing through the openings 7 from the pressure chamber will be cleansed by passing through the filtering material 8. For holding the false'bottom member 2 in position during the operation of the boiler, any suitable releasable means may be provided. In the drawing I have shown for this purpose, a spring plate 18, Fig. 3, the lower end of which is secured to the inner and lower portion of one side of the body 1, and the upper end of which is provided with an inwardly extending hook portion 19, which is adapted to engage the upper side of the member 2, when the latter is in its operative position at the bottom of the One side of the bottom member 2 boiler. may beprovidedwith a vertical channel 20 for receiving the spring plate 18, which serves as a catch which will automatically look when the bottom member 2 is slid down wardly into position. After the washing has been completed and the clothes and water emptied from the boiler, the false bottom member 2 may be released from the catch plate 18 and removed from the boiler. The cup-shaped members 4 may then be unscrewed and deta'chedfrom the flanges 3 so as to permit the filtering material?) to be removed and cleansed. lhe perforated cover 15 may be moved to the open position and the filtering material 1% then removed from the tubular portion or receptacle 12 for the purp'ose of cleansing said'material. The filtering material 8' and 14: may be fibrous asbestos, cotton, or any other suitable substance, I v
I do not limit my invention to the structure shown and described, as modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, maybe made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
1. A wash boiler having a washing chamber and apressurje chamber below the washing chamber, the pressure chamber having an inlet, and a n outlet communicating with. the washing chamber, said inlet comprising a cup shaped portion having a bottom opening, a perforated cover for said inlet adapted to be moved to the open or to the closed position, and filtering material in said cupshaped portion. p
2. A wash boiler having a washing chamher and a pressure chamber below the washing chamber, the pressure chamber having a discharge opening in its upper side and provided with an annular flange encircling said opening and provided with an inlet communicating with the washing chamber, a cup-shaped member having a discharge opening communicating with the washing chamber and provided with ascr'ew-threaded engagement with said annular flange, and filtering material in said inlet and in said cup-shaped member. v, I
3. Awash boiler having a washing chamber and a pressure chamber below the washing chamber, the pressure chamber having an inlet and anoutlet' communicating with said washing chamber, discharge conductor communicating withsaid pres'su're chamber and discharging into the washing cham ber at a point higher than the p'oint of discharge of said outlet, and lilterin'g material. in said outlet, the capacity for the discharge of water through said outlet with the filtering material therein being sul'liciently restricted topermit the pressure in the pressure chamber to force water therefrom through said discharge conductor into said washing chamber. J i p In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence O'f two subscribing witnesses. v
