Description

T. GTJNSALUS.
WASH-BOILER.
No. 191,582. PatentedJune5, 1877.
IJNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
THOMAS GUNSALUS, OF WEST TROY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,582, dated J une 5, 1877 application filed September 25, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS GUNSALUS, of West Troy, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wash-Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the water conduits, detached; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the under side of the false bottom.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to that class of washboilers which are constructed with a false bottom, and have passages or conduits leading to the top of the boiler, through which the water, when heated, escapes from below the false bottom; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of detached conduits, in combination with a detached false bottom, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, A is a wash-boiler of the usual construct-ion. B B are two conduits, of the shape represented in Fig. 2-that is, with a rounded back piece, b, which fits into the curvature of the boiler, and a straight front piece, b, provided with holes a at the top, and a projecting shoulder or bracket, 0, at the bot tom. 0 is the false bottom, having a perforated brace or cross-piece, D, at its under side, and the openings d d for the ingress of the water into the space under the false bottom. The ends of false bottom 0 are cut off straight, so as to rest upon the brackets c, as shown in Fig. 1.
From the foregoing description the operation of my invention will be readily understood. When it is desired to use the boiler A for washing purposes the conduits B B are inserted, after which the false bottom 0 is placed in position. The clothes are then soaped and placed in layers upon the false bottom, abutting against the conduits B at each side, and, a quantity of water having been previously put into the boiler, this is placed over the tire. The heated water and steam will be forced up through the conduits B B, and, escaping through openings on, is poured with considerable force down upon the clothes, where it mingles with the soap, and effectually cleanses them. The fiow of water from the conduits B down upon the clothes is constant and uninterrupted as long as the boiler is kept upon the fire.
I am aware that a removable false bottom having water-conduits attached has been used before, and also that it is not new to affix such conduits permanently to the ends of wash-boilers; and I do not claim, broadly, making the conduits B B separate or detached from the boiler; but
Having thus described my improvement, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The detachable conduits B, consisting, each, of a curved back piece,b, and a straight front piece, b, having perforations a, and projecting shelf or bracket 0 for the false bottom 0 to rest upon, so as to insure its parallelism to the bottom and prevent displacement, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS GUN SALUS.
