John For-8c,
Patented Oct. 29, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT oFrieE" 1 Claim.
My invention relates to tools designed so as to be adapted for a variety of different purposes, such being commonly known as combination tools.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of the character mentioned which will be of such design to be adapted to efficiently serve in the capacity of a large number of different tools.
The combination tool is especially designed to serve as an auxiliary door-securer to be placed on the inside of a door. If the lock should be picked, the auxiliary securing means will prevent entry by an intruder.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention consists in a device characterized as above mentioned and in certain details of construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure l is a horizontal sectional View of a door and door frame with the combination tool shown in the door frame as an auxiliary doorsecurer.
Figure 2 is an elevational view of the door frame and keeper with the door-securer shown placed therein.
Figure 3 is an elevational view of a part of the inside of the door and door frame showing the door-securer in position.
Figure 4 is a front view of one arm of the combination tool.
Figure 5 is a side view of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a rear view of the second arm of the combination tool.
Figure 7 is a side view of Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a rear view of the two arms of the combination tool connected together.
Figure 9 is a rear view in part of the two arms of the combination tool in closed position.
Figure 10 is a vertical sectional view taken on line I9lll of Figure 9.
Figure 11 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line IIII of Figure 9.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, Ill represents a door, while II is a door frame in which is secured a keeper I2. A wood block I3 is secured to the door frame ll. The numerals I4 and I5 designate the two arms of the combination tool which are tapered in shape. A tongue member IE is formed integrally with the arm member I5 near its upper portion. The arm I5 has several recesses I I spaced oppositely on its sides. There are two prongs I8 on the upper end of the arm I5 forming a V-shaped recess l9 and it being adapted to serve as a tack puller. The arm I4 has an opening 20 near its upper 5 end and also two rectangular openings 2!. The arm M has a prong 22 at its upper end which serves as a putty knife and a bottle opener.
When it is desired to utilize the combination tool as an auxiliary door-securer, the prong 22 10 of arm I4 is placed in the keeper I2 in the door frame with the free end of the arm extending on the inside of the door. After the arm I4 is placed in the keeper I2, the door Ill is closed. Then the small end of the arm 15 I5 is slid into either opening 2! of the arm I4, as may be required, until a recess I! in arm I5 registers with the opening ZI. If some one should attempt to open the door from the outside, the door would strike the lower end of 20 the arm I5 and this would bind the upper end against the wood block I3, thus preventing the door being opened. The notches I! are disposed at an angle toward the lower end of the arm I5.
The notches I! have three edges which will 25 securely bind the arm l5 with arm I l when arm I5 is inserted into one of the slots 2!.
There is a small auxiliary arm 23 secured by a screw 24 to the arm I4. The auxiliary arm has a flanged portion 25 which carries a glass cutter 30 26 at its lower end. The edge 21 of arm I4 is sharpened to form a cutting edge and is adapted to serve as a pencil sharpener. The flanged portion 25 of the auxiliary arm 23 serves as a cover for the beveled edge 21 when in a closed posi- 35 tion. The arm I4 is beveled at its lower end 28 to be used as a wood chisel.
The lower end of arm I5 is beveled at 29 so as to be adapted for use as a screw driver. The tongue l6 of arm I5 can be inserted into the 40 opening 20 of arm I4 and thereby the two arms are then secured together, and can be utilized as calipers or dividers. The combination tool can also be used as a weapon of defense by inserting prongs l8 into the opening 20 and grasp- 45 ing the two arms at the point where they are interlocked. The arms I 4 and I5 can be folded together when they are not being used. The depending tongue I 6 of arm I5 is slid into the opening 20 of arm I4 until the two arms are securely fastened together.
While I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of my device, I do not wish to be limited thereto, as there might be various changes made in detail of construction without 55 departing from the spirit of my invention comprehended within the scope of the appended claim and while I have emunerated and described the different purposes for which my device may be used, it is understood that the same may be employed for any other purpose to which it is applicable.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A door securer of the class describedcomprising a substantially tapered arm having a prong member at its upper end and having a depending tongue member in its upper portion, and a second substantially tapered arm having a prong member at its upper end, the said second arm having an opening in its upper portion, the tongue member of the first-mentioned arm being adapted to slide into the opening in the second-mentioned arm thereby securely locking the two arms together in folded relation.
