To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM L. DEMING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Looks for WVindows and Analogous Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to locks, the same having special utility when applied to window sashes and the drawing showing the same so applied, the object of the invention being to provide a lock which, while simple in construction and economical in manufacture, shall hold the window sashes, or other parts to which the same is applied, securely together and still permit of a wide range of adjustment, whereby the sashes of a window may be opened to a greater or less extent for ventilation and locked in any position to which they may be opened.
In the drawingFigure 1 shows, in perspective, portions of the upper and lower sashes of a window having my lock applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a section taken through the said sashes on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the housing for the locking bolt, a portion of said bolt also being shown in section; Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on the line 4% of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a front elevation of a portion of the keeper plate, the bolt head also being shown.
Taking up a more specific description by the use of reference characters, 1 represents the upper, and 2 the lower, sash of a win: dow. To one or both of the side rails of the upper sash I attach, by means of screws or otherwise, a keeper 3, the same consisting of an elongated plate which is bent outwardly at its longitudinal center so as to afford a space between this part of the keeper and the window rail. In the outwardly bent portion of the keeper I provide a series of transverse slots 4-, for the purpose hereinafter set forth. Upon the upper edge of the lower sash 2 I attach the remaining portions of the lock, the same comprising an outer housing 5, a locking bolt 6, a slotted cam lever 7, a plate 8 between the sides of the housing above the lower sash, and shoulder rivets 9 securing the sides of the housing together and holding the said plate 8 in position. The upper part of the housf ing 5 is bent into cylindrical shape, as shown at 10, in which part the bolt 6 is confined. The bolt itself is also of cylindrical shape, being cut away on its lower side near the center, at 11, and being provided at its inner end with a neck 12 having a T-shaped head 13. The outer end of the bolt is slotted, and the cam lever 7 operates in this slot of the bolt, being held in position by a pin 14k which extends through the bolt and through the slot 15 in the cam lever. The forward edge 16 of the cam lever is inclined with respect to the slot 15 so as to form a wedge, and the upper end of the cam lever is provided with a finger piece 17 to which pressure may be applied in operating the lock. The housing 5 is formed of a single sheet of metal, the same having its end portions 18 lying in the same plane, through which end portions screws 19 may be passed into the upper rail of the lower sash. At the inner. edges of the said end portions, the plate is bent upwardly so as to form two parallel portions 19, the same being separated by the plate 8. At the upper edges of the parallel portions 19, the plate is bent about to form the cylinder 10, as hereinbefore explained.
The plate 8 is provided with a pair of elongated slots 20, through which pass the shoulder rivets 9, whereby the said portions 19 of the housing may be held securely together and yet be prevented from clamping against the plate 8. This latter plate is provided on its upper edge with a tongue 21 which extends into the cut-away portion 11 of the bolt, said tongue thus limiting the longitudinal as well as the rotary movement of the bolt. At its outer end the plate 8 is formed into a sort of neck 22 which is given a twist through 90, and the plate is then bent downwardly so as to provide a portion 28 lying alongside the front face of the side rail through which a screw 24 may be inserted into said rail. The slots 20 enable the plate 8 to be moved back and forth so as to adapt the lock for sashes of varying widths.
Inasmuch as the plate 8 and the ends 18' of the housing are both secured to the sash, the locking bolt is held very rigidly in position. Any desired number of screws 19 and 24 may be employed. I have so arranged the screws as to have them enter the wood transversely of the grain, the screws 19 being shown as near the center of the upper edge of the sash. This arrangement of the I screws holds the device more securely than would be the case were the screws inserted into the wood in the direction of the grain. Above the bolt, the cylindrical portion 10 of the housing is provided with a notch, the same being indicated at 25, in which the edge of the cam lever 7 rests when the device is in locked position.
The operation of the lock is as follows: The lock bolt 6 having been withdrawn from the slots 4 in the keeper, the sashes are moved to their desired positions, and the lock bolt is thrust inwardly until the head 13 enters one of the slots 4 in the keeper. At that time the cam plate 7 is substantially horizontal and is in such position that the pin 1% rests in that end of the slot- 15 which is at the narrow end of the wedge. The cam plate and bolt are now turned through until the plate stands in substantially vertical position opposite the notch 25 in the housing. The cam plate is then forced downwardly, the edge 16 hearing against the housing both above and below the bolt, this movement carrying the bolt 6 backwardly and drawing the sashes toward each other. The cam plate is, of course, forced in this direction until the sashes are pressed together, the extent of the movement of the cam plate depending upon the amount of movement permitted between the sashes. The angle of the cam on the plate 7 is so small that the plate will remain in any position into which it may be thus forced. The neck 12 on the locking bolt is eccentric to the axial line of the bolt; and when the bolt is turned, the sashes are moved slightly in opposite directions. This is of especial advantage when the lock bolt is applied to the lower slot 4- in the keeper, in which position it is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. As is well known, the lower rail of the upper sash and the upper rail of the lower sash are beveled. as shown in Fig. 2, and the eccentricity of the neck 12 on the bolt causes the upper sash to be lifted and the lower sash to be depressed so as to draw the beveled portions of the sashes closely together.
lVhile the drawing shows what, at prescut, I regard as my preferred construction, the details of the lock may be varied somewhat, and I desire it to be understood that the following claims are not intended to be limited to such details any further than is rendered necessary by the specific terms therein employed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a device for locking together two relatively movable members, the combination with a keeper secured to one of said members, said keeper being provided with an elongated slot, a locking bolt carried by the other member, an elongated head on said bolt, and a slotted cam lever connected with the bolt, said lever being adapted to turn the bolt so as to rotate the head at an angle to the said slot in the keeper, and means cooperating wit-h the cam lever for forcing the bolt in a direction away from the keeper when the cam lever is moved relatively to the bolt, whereby the two members are drawn together.
2. In a. device for locking together two relatively movable members, the combination with a keeper secured to one of the members, said keeper having an elongated slot therein, of a housing secured to the other member, a bolt longitudinally and rotatably mounted in the housing, an elongated head on said bolt, and a slotted cam lever connected with the bolt, as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a device for locking the sashes of windows, the combination with a keeper plate secured to a side rail of the upper sash, said plate being provided with an elongated slot, of a housing secured to the upper edge of the lower sash, a locking bolt longitudinally and rotatably mounted in the housing, an elongated head on the inner end of the bolt, a lever secured to the outer end of the bolt adjacent the outer edge of the housing, said lever having a cam slot therein, and a pin on the bolt extending through said slot, as and for the purpose specified.

In a locking device for securing together the sashes of windows, the combination with a keeper plate secured to a side rail of the upper sash, said plate being provided with an elongated slot therein, of a housing secured to the upper rail of the lower sash, said housing having a cylindrical portion, a cylindrical locking bolt mounted for longitudinal and rotatable movement in the said cylindrical part of the housing, said bolt being provided with a slot in its outer end, a lever in the slotted end of the bolt, said lever having a cam slot extending longitudinally therein and at an angle with the inner edge of the lever, said inner edge being adapted to engage with the outer end of the housing, and an elongated head on the inner end of the bolt, as and for the purpose specified.
5. In a device for locking the sashes of windows, the combination with a keeper plate secured to one of the' side rails of the upper sash, said plate being provided with a series of elongated slots, of a housing secured to the upper edge of the lower sash opposite the keeper plate, said housing being provided with a notch in its upper and outer edge, a locking bolt rotatably and longitudinally mounted in said housing, said bolt having its outer end slotted, a lever mounted in the slotted end of the bolt adjacent the notch in the housing, said lever having a cam slot extending longitudinally therein and at a slight angle with respect to the inner edge of the lever, said inner edge being adapted to engage with the outer end of the housing in the notch thereof, a pin extending through the bolt and through the cam slot in the lever, and an elongated head on the inner end of the bolt, as and for the purpose specified.
6. In a device for locking the sashes of windows, the combination with a keeper plate secured to one of the side rails of the upper sash, said plate having a series of elongated slots arranged one above the other, of a housing secured to the upper edge of the lower sash opposite the keeper plate, said housing having a tubular portion, parallel side portions and diverging base portions, means for securing the base portions to the lower sash, a locking bolt mounted for rotative and longitudinal movement in the said tubular portion of the housing, said bolt being provided with a slot in its outer end and with a cut-away portion on one side substantially midway its length, a plate slidably mounted between the parallel portions of the housing, said plate having a tongue extending into the cut-away portion of the bolt for limiting the rotative and longitudinal movements of the latter, the said plate also being provided with a down-turned portion for extending alongside the side rail of the lower sash to which the plate is socured, a lever mounted in the slotted end of the bolt, said lever having an elongated cam slot therein, said slot forming a slight angle with the forward edge of the lever, a pin extending through the bolt and through the cam slot in the lever, and an elongated head on the inner end of the bolt, as and for the purpose specified.

In a device for locking the sashes of windows, the combination with a keeper plate secured to one of the side rails of the upper sash, said plate being provided with a series of elongated slots arranged one above the other, of a housing secured to the upper rail of the lower sash opposite the keeper plate, said housing being formed of a sheet of metal bent into tubular form at its center, then extending in two parallel side members, said side members then being bent outwardly so as to rest on the upper edge of the lower sash to which it is secured, a locking bolt mounted for rotative and longitudinal movements in the tubular part of the housing, said bolt being provided With a slotted outer end and with a cut-away portion in its side near its longitudinal center, a plate between the said side portions of the housing, said plate being provided with a slot, a shoulder rivet extending through the side portions of the housing and through the slot in the latter plate, whereby said latter plate may be adjusted in position with respect to the housing, a tongue on the said latter plate extending into the cut-away portion of the bolt, a lever mounted in the slotted end of the bolt, said lever having a slot extending longitudinally therein and at a slight angle with the inner edge of the lever, a neck on the inner end of the bolt, said neck being eccentric to the longitudinal axis of the bolt and a longitudinal head on the inner end of said neck.

In a device for locking the sashes of windows, the combination with a keeper plate secured to one of the side rails of the upper sash, said plate being provided with a series of elongated slots arranged one above the other, of a housing secured to the upper rail of the lower sash opposite the keeper plate, said housing being formed of a sheet of metal bent into tubular form at its center, then extending in two parallel side members, said side members then being bent outwardly so as to rest on the upper edge of the lower sash to which they are secured, the outer end of the tubular part of the housing having a notch therein, a locking bolt mounted for rotative and longitudinal movements in the tubular part of the housing, said bolt being provided with a slotted outer end and with a cut-away portion in its side near its longitudinal center, a plate between the said side portions of the housing, said plate being provided with a slot, a shoulder rivet extending through the side portions of the housing and through the slot in the latter plate, whereby said latter plate may be adjusted in position with respect to the housing, an extension on the said latter plate overhanging the front edge of the lower sash to which it is secured, a tongue on the said latter plate extending into the cut-away por tion of the bolt, a cam lever mounted in the slotted end of the bolt opposite the notch in the housing, said lever having a slot ex tending longitudinally therein and at a slight angle with the inner edge of the lever, a neck on the inner end of the bolt, said neck being eccentric to the longitudinal axis of the bolt and a longitudinal head on the inner end of said neck, as and for the purpose specified.
