e. 0. HILL Corpse Cooler No. 201,525. fiat 'ented March 19, 1878'.
mwnwmwwgmwkvww wkvmwmwm IIIIIIII/I/II/IIIII/IIIK ix 1 Tim ml m NPETERS, PHOTO-LITHDGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D. C
GEORGE o. HILL, or SALISBURY, MARYLA ND, ASSIGN OR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO CHARLES W. STITES, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORPSE-COOLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 2 November To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEOR Salisbury, Wicomico county invented a new and useful Gorpse-Preservers, a specification:
The object of m GE 0. HILL, of Maryland, have Improvement in of which the following is y invention is to produce an effective corpse-preserveran object attained in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of my improved corpse-preserver Fig. 2, a transverse section of the same on the line 1 2, and Figs. 3 and 4 detached views, illustrating features of the invention.
A isthe body of the corpse is made in two portions, portion, B, carrying the lower portion,
-preserver, which B and D, the upper ice-boxes E, and the D, containing the perforated platform F, 011 which the corpse is deposited. Suitable packing is inserted between the two parts of the casingA to insure a tight joint, and said parts are secured together by any suitable means, hooks a being shown in the present instance.
Beneath the platform F is apan, b, in which is placed a suitable disinfecting material, a
perforated cover, d, being applied to this pan, so as to retain the material in the same without interfering with its proper disinfecting action.
At one end of the platform F is a metallic casing, I, adapted for the reception of ice, and made of the shape shown in Fig. 3-that is, with a recess, e, adapted to receive the head of the corpse, and curved projections f on either side of this recess for adaptation to the neck and shoulders.
To the casing I, on each side of the recess 6, are secured at different heights eyes i, to either of which may be adapted hooks m carried by a perforated plate, J, on which the head of the corpse rests, and by adjusting which the head can be raised or lowered, as desired. Immediately above this end of the.
dated March 19, 1878 application filed 26, 1877.
r platform the portion B of the casingis carried down, so as to closely approach the casing I, and in this depressed portion is formed an opening, 12, to which is adapted a glazed cover, 10, hinged to the body, and having a. suitable catch by which it is retained in a closed condition. Suitable packing intervenes between this cover-and its bearing to insure a tight joint.
Above the cover 1) is a box-like lid, L, which is hinged to the portion B, and is secured by a suitable fastening, 8. By raising this lid the face of the corpse may be viewed through the glass in the cover 0 without admitting air to, or permitting its escape from the interior of the casing A.
When it is desired to expose the corpse, the upper portion of the case A is removed, the platform F raised, and two or more strips, M, Fig. 4, inserted between it and the upper edges of the portion D of the casing. These strips have on the under side shoulders t for bearing against the sides of the portion D, and on the top shoulders 11 for bearing against the edges of the platform F, so that the latter is held firmly in position.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the detachable casing I, adapted for the reception of ice and having a curved recess for the reception of the head, with the head-rest attached to the casing, all substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the casing I and its eyes 13 with the head-rest J and its hooks m, as described.
3. The combination of the lower portion D of the casing with the perforated platform F and shouldered strips M, as set-forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE O. HILL.
Witnesses:
WILLIAM B. CANTWELL, WM. M. OoLLINs.
