rosanna Specification of Lettere Patent. I' iPaintjedi illy 9i, Q Application mea March 25, 1912." serial no. essere. Y
To all whom t may concern.' y,
Be it known that I, ALICE W. FALLoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Chio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce an extremely simple and inexpensive device which is adapted to be conveniently and easily operated to adjust the cigars from one position to another within the box without removing them therefrom so that the upper layer of cigars in the box will always' be maintained near the top edge thereof to give it the appearance of anewly or recently opened box, thus rendering it practical for tie manufacturer to equip every box of cigars with one of these devices before the clgars are placed therein.
My invention consists in the combination with la cigar box having a series of upwardly tapered notches in the sides thereof, of an adjustable bed or support the edges ofl which are flanged or bent downwardly, said bed beingadapted to t the inside of said box and having elongated slots in two of the flanged edges of said bed through which a ribbon or tape is adapted to ass, spring wires each fastened at its mid le. point/on ythe under side of said bed adjacent the rib'- bon or tape, said wires running parallel to said ribbon or tape and bent at right angles near each end of the bled to form extendingy ends, saidv ends projecting through the ianged edges of said bed and projecting beyond same and slightly bent upwardly and inwardly at their ends' to formiesilient engaging catches for the sides and notches of saidbox` My invention further consists in the details ofi'construction and .in the combination of arts as herein set forth and claimed.
' n the drawings, which serve to illustrate the construction and application of my -invention: Figure l is a perspective View of a cigar box equipped with my invention, part of the casin of which iswhroken away for the sake of c earness; Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken through a cigar box equipped'with my invention; Fig. 3 is a erspective bottom view of the ,adjustable bed; Fig. 4 lis a vertical sectionuoi a portion of one of the notched sides et"A the box showing 'a -spring catch firmly supported in one of the notches.
.ln the` embodiment of my invent-ion as illustrated and which shows a preferred construction, l represents a ci ar box Vor casing which may be of any des1red construction having a lid 2 hinged thereto. The front and rear sides 3 of the box are provided with a series of notches 4 having upwardly tapered or beveled sides 5. These notches are preferably provided one above the other adjacent the edges of the front andl rear sides 3 of the box. A bed preferably of metal 6 is provided and is adaotd to slidably fit the inside of said cigar box 1.v This bediis stamped with llanged ed es 7, 7 .and 8, 8, said flanges being provi ed for the purppse of forming suitable bearings for the spring ywi e catches to be hereinafter described and lo strengthen and add to the appearance and finish of the bed. A slot 9 is provided in each of the flanges 7 through which a ribbon or tape 10 is adapted to pass.
IThe purpose of the ribbon 10 is to provide convenient lifting means whereby the cigars may be tied after they have been properly packedin the box. Fastened on the bottom of said bed 6 are two spring wires 1l which are fastened preferably by means of a drop of solder l2 in proximity rto the center of the bed. These wires llrun parallel with the ribbon or tape 10 from 'each vside of the dro of solder to points near the flanges 7 of the ed 6 where they are bent at right angles and pass through suitable openings 'm Athe flanges 8 thereby forming four projectln resilient su porting catches 13 for the be -These cato es 13 are' preferably bent upwardly and inwardly as shown at 14 to form more suitable engaging catches. Owing to the fact that the wires 11 are fastened only at their middle point the ends of-*same forming the catches 13 willbe resilient allowing ,the bed .to be elevated very easily to the osition desired but forming a secure bed or the cigarsl against being forced downwardly beyond the notchesvi.
It is evldent that the construction of the bed dis extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture and it is these qualities that make the device a most practical one for the purposes Aset forth. 4
The'operationof he device is'as follows:
,After the cifrar box has been equippedwith the 'adjustable bed, the cigars properly packed therein andthe ribbon tied preferably in a bow at the top thereof andthe box, is shipped to the retailer who upon o ening the lid.unties the ribbon and places tr ,ezboain e show onse witl'i the ribbons extending dorm the thereof where they will not be in the wey.
