UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH HAIGHT, OF PORT CHESTER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT lN DINNER-PAIL AND LANTERN.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,294, dated December 18, 1877 application filed November 27, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osEPH HAIGHT, of Port Chester, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Dinner-Pail and Lantern, "of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a vertical section, showing the coffee-heating device in position for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, showing the device arranged for use as a lantern. Fig. 3 is a plan view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to the class of dinnerpails that contain a lamp for illuminating and heating purposes; and it consists in a movable top, having attached to it a receptacle for coifee, which may be moved over the lamp when it is desired to heat the cofi'ee, and may be removed fi'Olll over the lamp when empty, so as to prevent the melting of the soldering of the receptacle when it is empty.
Referring to the drawing, A is a pail, which is separated into two compartments, B O, by a partition, D, which extends'about two-thirds the distance from the bottom of the pail to the top.
The compartment 0 is inclosed by a cover, a, and is provided with a hinged door, b, through which the lunch-box c is introduced and removed.
The compartment B contains the illuminating and heating lamp E, and is provided with a hinged door, F, having a panel, d, of mica or other transparent material. The bottom of the pail, below the compartment B, is perforated, to admit air to supply the lamp.
The pail is provided with a cover, G, in which there is an aperture, 0, for the escape of smoke from the lamp. This aperture is covered with perforated sheet metal, and is provided with a hood or cowl, f, which protects the lamp from blasts of air.
A coffee-receptacle, H, is attached to the cover G, and projects downward into the pail nearly to the cover a of the compartment 0, and fills the space between the aperture 0 and the side of the pail. An opening, g, communicatin g with the coffee-receptacle, is formed in the pail-cover, and provided with a rim, h, to which is fitted a cover, 1', having a rim, j, for holding the cup k.
The cover G may be turned so as to bring the coffee-receptacle over the lamp when it is desired to warm the coffee.
When the device is used as a lantern the cover is turned so as to bring the aperture 0 over the lamp, to permit of the ready escape of the smoke and heat.
I do not restrict myself to the exact construction herein described, as the device may be varied in form and arrangement of parts without departing from my invention. For example, the pail may be made elliptical instead of circular, and the cover-may be made to slide, instead of turn, to bring the cofl'eereceptacle over the lamp.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The movable cover, having an aperture for the escape of the smoke and heat of the lamp, and having attached to it a cofl'ee-receptacle, in combination with a pail containing an illuminating and heating lamp, substantially as herein shown and described.
JOSEPH HAIGHT.
