Description

Sept 17, 1935. c. A. BERINGER I SAIL RIG FCR WATER CRAFT Filed Aug. 19, 1933' Patented Sept. 17, 1935 UNETED STATES matte PATENT @FWQE SAIL RIG FQR WATER CRAFT Christian August Eeringer, Berlin, Germany Application August 19, 1933, Serial No. 385,897 In Germany September 1'2, 1932 8 Claims.
stern and the sail area in front of the mast is subdivided into several sails, whose sail area in the position near to the wind in projection on the midship plane is approximately equal to the sail area of the main sail.
An aerodynamic slot effect is obtained by subdividing the fore sail area.
There is also provided according to the invention an auxiliary mast, whose head is connected to the main mast and whose heel is arranged approximately in the center between the heel of the main mast and the stem.
The invention therefore consists in the com- ,bination of a main mast approximately in the center of the midship line and of an inclined auxiliary mast approximately in the center between the heel of the main mast and the tack of the foremost sail. The head of the auxiliary mast lies close to the head of the main mast and is connected therewith. There are also provided according to the invention a main sail on the main mast and at least four fore sails having in projection on the midship plane approximately the same sail area as the main sail.
Further features of the invention are obvious from the further description.
With reference to the accompanying drawing, the subject matter of the invention is shown by way of example in side elevation. I
There are provided in the sail rig according to the invention two masts A and B which are inclined towards each other; these masts carry the main sail with converging luff and leach and the large foresail area which is multi-subdivided in proportion to the main sail. The head members 0 and d of the masts are connected by a bolt e after the manner of a jolly mast. The two masts are then so rigged that mast A carries the main sail I and a fore sail III while there is arranged on the mast B on its aft edge a fore sail II (like a middle staysail) overlapping the fore sail III and in front at least a fore sail V or IV.
It is believed in view of the foregoing that a further detailed description of the invention is unnecessary. Likewise it is believed that the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
