IMPROVEMENT IN PEG-CUTTERS.

` Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,788, dated February 26, 1878; application :filed f January 9, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHAs. A. CORMAN, of Cochituate, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Peg-Gutters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in peg-cutters, for removing the pegs from boots and shoes; and it consists in the arrangement and combination of parts, that 'will be more fully described hereinafter, whereby the pegs can be removed from all parts of the boot and shoe without the slightest danger of injuring the upper.

The accompanying drawing represents my invention.

a, represents a suitable base, from the top of which rises the standard b. The upper end of this standard is bent over, so as to form the horn c, which is so shaped as to be adapted to be inserted in both the heel and toe of a boot or shoe. In the lower end of the base is placed the driving-pulley d and shaft, from which pulley passes the driving-belt up over the two angle-pulleys c, and then forward over the "pulley g, at the upper end of the horn c. The

angle-pulleys do nothing but change the direction of the belt; but the pulley g operates the pegcutter h, located in the front end of the horn, by frictional contact therewith. For this reason the journals of the pulley g are placed in the sliding box i, which is attached to the upper end of the screw l. This screw passes through the nut n, which is held in position by the shoulders o, and which is provided with holes in its periphery to receive a lever or other tool, in case more power should be needed to turn it than can be applied with the fingers. By turning upon this nutin the pulley g can be moved forward, so as to bear with great power against the lower part g of they peg-cutter h.

Through the upper end of the horn cis made an opening, just large enough to receive the peg-cutter h, which consists of a horizontallyrevolving wheel, having cutting-ratchets on its upper face.

That portion r of the horn which surrounds the outer rim of the cutter forms a protector, to prevent the cutter from injuring the upper. The lower portion q of the cutter is formed so as to t against the edge of the pulley g.

After the pegs have been cut from the toe of the boot or shoe it is only necessary to reverse it, and the horn will Iit and operate in the heel just as well.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination of the movable pulley g and adj usting-screw with the peg-cutter h, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination of the horn c, pulleys d e g, adjusting-screw l, nut n, and peg-cutter h, substantially as specified.
