1 Claim.
This invention relates to cutting tools and more particularly to a means for cutting rope, cord or the like.
An object of this invention is to provide a cutting device in the form of a keen edged blade which is so constructed that it can be mounted at a convenient point and which embodies features whereby the keen edge of the device is protected so as to prevent accidental injury from the blade.
Another object of this invention is to provide an exceedingly simple device of this kind which is so constructed that the blade will be rigidly held in operative position and the mounting means for the blade can be secured to any convenient and relatively rigid support.
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a device constructed according to the embodiment of this invention, showing the device mounted on a support which is shown in fragmentary form.
Figure 2 is a detail side elevation of the device.
Figure 3 is a sectional View taken on the line 3-3 of Figure'2.
Figure 4 is a detail side elevation of the cutting blade.
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the views, the numeral ||l designates generally the support which may be in the form of a wall, desk, bench or the like, and this support l0 may be either horizontal or vertical or on any other angle relative to the horizontal or vertical.
Secured to this support I!) is a blade mounting means in the form of a pair of base members II which are secured to the support II) as by screws or securing members l3. A substantially U- shaped blade supporting member I2 is integral with the base plates or members II and this blade supporting member |2 has cut out portions or slots I4 extending inwardly from one end thereof, which end is the operative end of the device.
The bight of the blade supporting member 2 is reduced and provided ,with a second U-shaped member l5 which is integral with the U-shaped member l2, and this U-shaped member l5 has adjacent one end thereof a headed pin l6 extending transversely therethrough at a point inwardly from the inner and outer edges thereof.
This U-shaped member l5 extends throughout the length of the base members II and a blade, generally designated as IT, is adapted to be removably disposed within the blade engaging member l5.
The blade-11 comprises a relatively thick or heavy body l8 provided at one end with a notch l9 opening through said one end of the body l8 and the pin I6 is adapted to be received in this slot l9. Theslot I9 is relatively long and the pin |B is disposed at a point intermediate the ends of the blade engaging member l5 so that when the body I8 is disposed between the parallel legs of the member 15, the blade will be firmly held within this member.
The forward end of the body I8 is provided with an oifset portion 2|] which limits the movement of the blade IT in one direction within the blade engaging member l5. This blade I! is provided with a keen edge or knife 2| extending along one edge thereof, which keen edge 2| is adapted to be disposed between the parallel legs of the supporting member l2 and inwardly of-the parallel legs of the blade engaging member I5. The blade I1 is also provided adjacent the forward end thereof with a hole 22 within which a removing imple-' ment or the like may be disposed in the event the blade I1 sticks within the clamp or blade engaging member l5. The forward end of the supporting member I2 is rounded off as at 23, and this rounded off portion constitutes a guide means which is adapted to guide a cord or the like toward the keen edge 2| of the blade ll. This guide portion 23 also acts as a guard for the keen edge 2| so as to prevent injury from the blade I! while at the same time permitting a cord or other flexible member to be engaged with the keen edge 2| as the cord is pulled longitudinally of the blade and between the guide or guard members 23.
In the use of this device, the support including the base members the member l2 and the blade clamping or engaging member I5 is adapted to be mounted by means of the securing members l3 on a suitable'support such as a desk, wall or the like, and where the support is mounted in a relatively upright position, the guard portion 23 of the device is disposed uppermost. The cord which it is desired to cut by theblade 2| can be drawn downwardly over the curved portions or guide member 23 which will move the cord toward the keen edge 2|. The cord, if desired, can be drawn for substantially the entire length of the blade I! between the parallel legs of the supporting member |2 as the cut out portions l4 provide side guards and these guards are disposed in spaced departing from the spirit thereof, such changes.
and modifications being restrictedonly by scope of the following claim.
What is claimed is:
A device as set forth comprising a blade having a rounded end and a notch extending inwardly from the opposite end intermediate the longituthe dinal edges thereof, a U-shaped blade engaging member, a pin extending through the parallel legs of said blade engaging member and disposed intermediate the ends of the member, said pin being adapted to engage in the notch of the blade to hold the blade against movement in the direction of the parallel legs of the blade engaging member, a stop carried by the blade and engagingone end of the blade engaging member to limit the insertion of the blade in the member, and a pair of guard members disposed on opposite sides of the blade and in spaced parallel relation thereto, said guard members having rounded upper end portions coacting with the rounded end of the blade to guide an article toward the keen edge of the blade.
