Description
L. TYREMAN March 10, 1931.
KNIFE Filed Oct 24. 1930 Patented Mar. 10, 1931 UNITED STATES LEE TYREMAN, OF STROUDSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA KNIFE Application filed. October 24, 1930. Serial No. 490,997.
This invention relates to a knife designed more especially for slitting paper cartons along the edges thereof, one of the objects being to provide a simple and compact device which will be guided accurately along the edge being out.
Another object is to provide the knife blade which is adjustable to cut through different thicknesses, the guiding means serv- Eng also as a guard for the point of the blade so as to minimize danger of accidental injury thereby.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawing- Figure 1 is a side elevation.
Figure 2 is a plan view.
Figure 3 is an end elevation showing the knife in use.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal section through the head portion of the device.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates the handle of the knife formed of a single length of metal folded to provide an eye 2 at one end of the handle while the terminalsof the strip lo cated at the other end are extended at angles to the strip to form guide fingers 3 which diverge and form preferably a right angle.
In practice the fingers are placed astride the corner or edge to be cut and the point 9 is forced into the box or carton C. The bandle is then pulled along the carton and the knife will slit it. By adjusting the blade the depth of the out can be regulated so that the contents of the carton will not be injured.
What is claimed is:
l. A knife including a handle, diverging guide fingers thereon, a blade adjustable angularly in the handle having an angular recess with sharp walls, there being a point at one end of one wall of the recess supported between and shielded by the fingers.
2. A knife including a strip folded to form a handle, fingers formed by the terminals of the strip at one end of the handle, said fingers diverging to form guides and a blade seated between the sides of the handle and having a slitting hook, the point of which is supported between and shielded by the fingers.
3. A knife including a strip folded to form a handle, fingers formed by the terminals of the strip at one end of the handle, said fingers diverging to form guides, a blade seated between the sides of the handle and having a slitting hook the point of which is supported between and shielded by the fingers, a pivotal connection between the handle and blade, and means extending through the handle and blade for clamping them together, there being a slot in the blade for the reception of said means.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature.
LEE TYREMAN.
