Description
0. SEDGW-IGK. Y Bottle-Stopper Fastener.
No. 200,224. Patented Feb. 12,1878.
UNITED STATES PATENT OF Ic CHARLES SEDGWICK, OF NEW YORK, Y.-
IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTLE-STOPPER FASTENERS;
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,224, dated February 12, 1878; application filed January 8, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES SEDGWIGK, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and'Improved Bottle- Stopper, of which the following is a specification:
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation, Fig. 2 a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a top view, of my improved bottle-stopper.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention has for its object to furnish an improved bottle-stopper that maybe opened and closed with great facility, and that closes the mouth of the bottle in tight and reliable manner.
The invention consists in the combination, in a bottle-stopper-fastening device, of a capplate having a suitable rubber stopper, and top lugs carrying an anti-friction roller, with a swinging bail pivoted to the neck-band of the bottle, said bail being guided in slotted ears or extensions of the cap-plate, and allowed to pass slightly back of the center of the said roller, so as to retain the stopper in the bottle-mouth, as hereinafter described.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a bottle of any suitable shape, and B a capplate having a rubber or other stopper arranged at the under side, and made of tapering shape, so as to spread when being pressed on the rim of the bottle-mouth, and close thereby the mouth in effective manner.
The cap-plate is cast with top lugs a, that carry in suitable holes a small lateral roller or cylinder, 0, that turns easily on its axle. The roller 0 is made smooth, and supported so as to project slightly above the lugs. The cap-plate B has, furthermore, at opposite sides of the roller, two slotted extensions or ears, D, whose slots are placed at right angles to the axis of the roller, and arranged in such a manner thereto that the rear ends of the slots are slightly back of the center of the roller, while the fiont ends extend in front of the roller at suitable length.
The slotted extensions serve to guide the sides of a bail or yoke, E, that is pivoted to the neck wire or band in the usual manner, and arranged to straddle the stopper, so that its horizontal top part is parallel to the axis of the roller, and its bight such as to keep the rubber stopper tightly compressed in the mouth of the bottle when carried into proper position.
To close the bottle, the thumbs are placed on the front part of the stopper and against the bail, and the latter carried over the roller by the joint downward pressure of the thumbs on the stopper and backward pressure on the bail, the anti-friction roller facilitating its easy passage over the roller into position at the rear ends of the slots, and consequently back of the center of the roller, by which position of the bail the stopper is rigidly confined to the mouth of the bottle.
The opening of the bottle is accomplished in similar manner to the closing by placing the thumb against the sides of the bail, but back of the roller, and throwing the bail forward in the slots, the revolving motion of the roller facilitating the operation of opening the bottle.
By pushing the bail forward with the thumbs the stopper is lifted clear of the mouth, and swung with the bail into proper position sidewise of the neck, being retained therein by the bail without the annoying rattling and dangling aboutof other stoppers.
The stopper is retained by the slotted cappiece and the pivoted bail passing through the stopper on the bottle, and brought at any time back over the mouth and closed, as described, and retained by the joint action of the elastic stopper portion and of the binding bail and roller.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, in a bottle-stopper-fastening device, of a pivoted bail or yoke, and of a stopper having a cap-plate, with anti-friction roller and slotted guide-ears or extensions, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, in a bottle-stopper-fastening device, of a pivoted bail or yoke with a stopper having a cap-plate, with the usual elastic stopple portion at the under side, a revolving anti-friction roller parallel to the upper part of the bail at the top, and. side extensions or ears with hail-guiding slots that extend from a point slightly back of the center of the roller to some distance in front of the same, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, With a stopper having a cap-plate with revolving anti-friction roller, turning in perforated lugs of the cap-plate, and projecting above the same of a swinging bail or yoke pivoted to the neck-band, and
CHARLES SEDGWIOK.
