UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
SAMUEL S. SHERMAN AND JEREMIAH Gr. SHERMAN, OF MOHENRY, ILL.
IMPROVEMENT IN FARM-GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,322, dated January 15, 1878 application filed August 30, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SAML. S. SHERMAN and JEREMIAH G. SHERMAN, of McHenry, in the county of McHenry, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful .Improvements in Farm-Grate Openers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to that class of gates which are opened and closed on a line with the fence; and it consists in the combination, with such gate, of a guide-rod attached to the gate, and passing between stationary pulleys, a shaft with double-flanged roller, on which the gate is supported, and tumbling-rods attached to the ends of said shaft, and provided at their outer ends with cranks and hand-pieces, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Inthe accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective, and Fig. 2 a cross-section, of our invention.
In the figures, A A represent the rear, and B B the front, posts of the gate. 0 represents the gate itself, which is made of slats, in any of the known and usual ways, the slats being horizontal. Projecting from the rear of the gate is a guide-rod, L, which passes back and between two grooved pulleys, m, on a post, K.
D represents a shaft, which lies horizontally crosswise of the two rear posts, and is provided with a flanged wheel or roller, a, at its center. This shaft is provided with suitable bearings, e 0, attached to the posts, so that it may easily revolve. V
F F represent two tumbling-rods, which are connected at their inner ends to the ends of the shaft D. These rods are supported by the posts G G, through which they pass, and are provided upon their outer ends with the cranks H H. To the handle or wrist of the cranks are secured the hand-pieces I I. A
The upper slat of the gate rests its under side upon wheel a, and between its flanges and when the shaft D is revolved the gate is moved endwise, either to open or close it, ac cording to the direction the roller is revolved. Cogs maybe made upon the roller, to work in with teeth upon the gate-slat, if desired; but we do not consider this necessary. v
, The gate is easily operated, by a rider or driver, by taking hold of the handle I 011 either side, and revolving'the roller or shaft D through the tumbling-rod and crank.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the gate 0, of the guide-rod L andthe pulleys m m, the shaft D, withdouble-fianged roller a, the tumbling-rods F F, with cranks H H at their ends, and the hand-pieces I I, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 17th day of August, 187 7 SAMUEL S. SHERMAN. JEREMIAH G. SHERMAN.
