-' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HIRAM S. HARRIS, OF JETT, KENTUCKY.
GATE.
= PEC1F1CATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 344,271, dated June 22, 1886.
Application filed March 8, 1886. Serial No. 194,428. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM S. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at J ett, in the county of Franklin and State of Kentueky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to certain improvements in sliding gates, its object being to provide novel means for operating the same; and it consists in certain features of construction, which will be fully described and particularly pointed out in the following specification.
This invention relates particularly to improvements on a patent granted to me October 27, 1885, No. 329,308. This object I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved gate, partly in section; and Fig. 2, an end view of the same.
In the drawings, A designates a gate construeted of the usual battens, parallel bars, and oblique braces. This gate is supported upon rollers, and passes back and forth between two main posts, B.
O designates the catclrpost, and D the abutting post at the rear of the gate.
E designates side posts connected to the main posts and supporting the operating-rods.
Between the main posts, over the gate proper, is journaled a flanged drum, F. Upon the ends of the shaft carrying the drum are secured pinions G.
A beam, II, is secured across the upper ends of the main posts, extending out on each side thereof in the direction of the side posts, E.
Cords or wires I connect the drum with the rear end of the gate and with a spring-latch, K, upon the forward end thereof.
Upon the outer ends of the cross-piece II are pivoted the angle-levers J. These levers are provided with toothed segments L on their inner ends, which engage with the pinions G upon the drum-shaft. The other ends of the angle-levers are connected to the operatingrods, which are supported by the side posts, E.
The latch K is not claimed in this appliea tion, as it has been covered by my patent of October 27, 1885.
The essential feature of this invention consists in the means for operating the gate.
To operate the gate, reciprocate the operating-rods,which will cause the drum to revolve by means of the toothed segments and pinions. The drum revolving will draw the gate back and forth by means of the cords I.
\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a sliding gate supported upon anti-friction rollers and passing between the main supporting posts, of the drum mounted upon a suitable shaft, the cords connecting the drum to the rear end of the gate and to the latch upon the forward end of same, the beveled pinions mounted upon the shaft of the drum, the intergearing segmental cog-sections, and the angle'levers upon which they are mounted, and the operating-rods extending laterally at right angles to the plane of travel of the gate, so as not to project toward the roadway, and to enable the gate to be opened or closed by one direct motion back or forth, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
