JAMES F. MGOREARY, OF NEW BRIGHTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
SLIDING AND ROLLING GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,994, dated March 14, 1882.
' Application filed September 30. 1881. (No model.)
- To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that LJAmns F. McGREARY, of New Brighton, Beaver county, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Sliding and Rolling Gates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a sliding gate constructed as fully described hereinafter, whereby the same may be operated more efficiently and easily than by the means heretofore employed.
In the drawing the figure represents a perspective view of my improved gate and appurtenances.
A is a post, having a roller, (1, upon which rests one of the bars of the gate B. The gate B is provided at one end with two rollers, c c, which bear upon two parallel rails of a stationary fence section, and serve to support the end of the gate on which they are situated, and also to facilitate the movements of the gate.
()n the post A, and above the gate B, is secured a bracket, 0, in which is hung a drum, D, turning with its shaft 11, to the projecting ends of which shaft are connected, by means of universal couplingsf, the inner ends of crankrods T, suitably supported by posts K K.
A post, Gr, situated on the side of the gateway opposite to that occupied by the post A, carries akeeper, 9, into the notch of which fits apin,t', on the end bar, J, ofthe gate. The bar J also carries a lever, H, to one end of which is connected a rope or chain, c, which passes around the drum D, and is then fastened to the other end of the gate byany suitable means. The lower end of the pivoted lever H bears upon the keeper 9 when the gate is closed.
The operation of the gate is as follows: The drum D is caused to revolve by means of either of the crank-rods T, which rods impart motion to the shaft b whatever may be the angle of the rod to the drum-sh aft. As the drum D revolves it draws upon the rope or chain 6, and when the gate is shut first swings the lever H, causing its lower end to bear on the end of the keeper 9 and tilt and raise the end of the gate, thus releasing the pin r from the notch in the keeper 9, thereby allowing the gate to be drawn along by means of the continued motion of the rope e. The gate is closed by reversing the motion of the drum, when the pin slips over the catch and locks the gate.
It will be seen that by the construction described the gate is automatically latched and unlatched by the action of the rods in the opening and closing of the gate.
I claim- 1". The combination, in a sliding gate, of appliances for causing the gate to move back and forth, and a lever, H, pivoted to the gate, arranged to bear on the keeper, and connected with and operated by said appliances to tilt and release the gate from the keeper, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the post G, catch g, and sliding gate B, provided with the pin '6 and lever, for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the sliding gate, pin 2', drum and cord 6, and with the post G and catch 9, of the lever H, connected with the cord, and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES F. MCGREARY.
