Description

HERMANN C. ERNST, OF VATNDALIA, ILLINOIS.
MANNER 0F FASTENING BEDSTEADS.
Speccation of Letters Patent No. 1,991, dated February 28, 1841.
T0 all wiz-om 2f may concern.'
Be it known that I, HERMANN C. ERNST, of Vandalia, in the county of Fayette and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Method of Confining the Rails and Posts of Bedsteads Together; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The nature of my invention is a casting of iron or other fusible inetal nearly in the shape of an anchor the stern of which is round and intended to be driven into a hole niade into the internal angle of the post. On each end of the anchors head there is a round tenon which together with two square tenons formed on the stein being fitted into the rail and the whole put togetherA and the bedstead corded it will stand perfectly square and steady.
To enable others skilled in the art to inake and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction, reference being had on the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, in which- Figui'e 1 is a view of the bedstead with an anchor in each angle. Fig. 2, is a section showing the manner in which the anchor is fitted into the post and rails. Fig. 3 is a representation of the upper side of the anchor the stem of which is seven-eighths of an inch in diameter and of sufficient length to go four and a half inches into the post. The tenons on the head of the stern are so constructed as to range with the dotted square line A, B, O. Fig. 4, is a representation or end view of the anchor showing the situation and shape of the wings on each end of the head, which are designed to prevent the rails of the bedstead from canting. It also shows the under side of the square tenons horizontal with the cent-er of the stein, which is so disposed for convenience in casting.
The manner of joining the bedstead is to make a hole in the post, drive in the stern of the anchor tight so that the square tenons fit close on the sides of the post. Out the rails square to the length required. On the inside of the rail at each end make a hole to fit the tenon on the anchors head, and one square inortise to ft the square tenon, having the square tenon one and a quarter inches from the upper side of the rail, the head and foot boards are joined by a mortise one half of an inch deep and should be put in first, in putting up the bedstead.
IVhat I clailn as iny invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The application of a casting nearly in t-he shape of an anchorl for the purpose of confining the rails and posts of bedsteads to each other.
