Description
'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
C. J. FOUNTAIN, G. F. HILLYER, AND J. F. ADMIS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MODE OF CONSTRUCTING BEDSTEADS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 1,1291, dated April 20, 1839.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, CORNELIUS J. FOUN- TAIN, GARRET F. HILLYER, and JOHN F. AD- AMS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement called a Portable Bedstead, of which the following is a perfect description.
The upright posts are the same as in ordinary bedsteads and may be either high or short as required or wished and may be placed on casters or otherwise. The side rails are attached at each end to the posts by dovetail on the outer side ot' the posts. The end rails are each separated in the middle thereof by a half or lapping joint and are connected at this joint by a hinge placed on the under or lower side of the rail. The said end rails are attached at each end to the upright posts by an open mortise or dowel and by a hinge placed on the upper side of the rail and the inside of the post. The head and foot boards are each connected with the posts by open mortise or in any other way as usual in ordinary bedsteads.
The bottom is of saeking or cord. If of sacking the saine is attached to the side rails only and that by cord.
Testers as in ordinary bedsteads are used or not as thought proper.
That we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The improvement ot' separating the end rails by a half or lapping joint in the middle which joint is connected by a hinge on the bottom of the rail and the connecting of said end rails to the upright posts by open mortise or dowel and a hinge at each end of the rail fastened on the upper side of the rail and the inside of the posts, so that when the bedstead is put up and in use by lifting or raising the end rails at the middle where the oint is formed the whole may be folded or closed up and moved from place to place without being taken down or the parts separated.
Duplicate drawings of our said invention are herewith transmitted one of which is hereunto annexed and to which we hereby refer.
C. J. FOUNTAIN. G. F. HILLYER. JOHN F. ADAMS. Vitnesses JOHN H. MUYHER, HENRY SMITH.
