Description

Jan. 15, 1935;
L. ELLIS CLAMP Filed Feb. 27, 1933 Patented Jan. 15, 1935 new This invention relates toimprovements inga clamp. 1'"; 1 I 9 One of the .main objects-of :thisinvention-is to provide a clamp whiclipis asimplev and economical in construction, so that it can bemanue factured and' 1 placed. on ;.the market at a: minim mum of. cost; and"'which-at the-'same time is strong and durable, so as to be especially adapted for" use by toolmake'rs'; machinists, and so forth.
Another object is to provide a strong clamp consisting of only a few members, all of which can be economically made and conveniently assembled, and which can also be readily disassembled, so that any member can be quickly replaced if necessary. g
A further object is to provide a clamp which can be conveniently and easily manipulated; and wherein one jaw is tiltable relative to the other, so that they will readily position themselves to fit exactly and instantly upon the surfaces of pieces of work placed therein, whether parallel or not; and wherein the precise fitting on the work is not disturbed by the tightening of the clamp; and the work pieces can be clamped tightly together, no matter how thin the same may be. 1
A still further object is to provide such a" clamp which can be very tightly applied, to suit the various demands, and wherein the clamp is adapted to be fully snugged or tightened by hand for substantially all work, and either nut may bealso additionally tightened by the use of a wrench or; pliers, and also by a lever bar.
These and various other objects and advantages will become apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which the invention is shown in its preferred form, it being understood that various other arrangements and forms of construction may be resorted to for carrying. out the objects and purposes of this invention.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal central section through my improved clamp, showing the jaws slightly g UN [TEDISLTATES1 their forward or grippingendSlO andgll' beveled, in the usual manner; v 1 .-.A front bolt or screw .12- and .a rear bolt or screw 131 are mounted in suitable bores or. open-i ings l4 and 15Iprovi'cledqin the lower jawll, to extend upwardly therefrom, and-they preferably have their lower-ends fiushwith the .lower face through the lower jaw and through the bolts wherein pins 16 are insertedwith a driving fit, so that they are normally held in position therein but are adapted to be driven therefrom when it is desired to remove the bolts.
The upper jaw 10 is provided with flared openings or apertures 18 and 19 through which bolts 12 and 13 extend, said apertures being preferably flared from their middle part outwardly to both ends thereof, as indicated in the] drawing. With this arrangement the upper jaw is freely movable on the bolts for placing it in positionon the work, and it is also tiltable thereon so that the jaws are free to fit. exactly and of work placed therein, whether the same be parallel or not.
instantly upon the outer surfaces of the pieces A pair of nuts or clamping elements are and operated on bolt 12,above jaw 10; and a vnut 21 which is hexagonal or angular on its exterior and is mounted on bolt 13, to be oper ated between the jaws. Holes 22 are provided in the wings of nut'20, and holes. 23 are pro vided in angular nut 21, so that a suitable rod or bar 24 may be placed in said holes to enable turning either of said nuts or 21 with greater force; and it is apparent that these nuts are also properly arranged to be engaged and operated by means of a wrench as well as by pliers.
A pair of notches 25 are provided at the rear ends in the adjacent faces of jaws wand 11, so that nut 21 may be contained therein, where by the jaws are adapted to be brought into complete and close contact with their adjacent faces,
and are thereby adapted to clamp work pieces of very thin material.
With this disclosed form of construction only a few parts or members are required to make my improved clamp, said members being plain and durable, thus effecting utmost simplicity and economy and also great durability, and the parts are separable so as to provide for replacing the same. The upper -jaw is freely tiltable relative to the lower 'jaw so that the jaws-"will readilyw assume their proper position on the work pieces, and they will fit-exactly and instantly uponthe outer surfaces'of any work, whether the same are parallel or not.; Herein the upper jaw 10* is placed in position on the work, and-;,nutji23y is then easily spun to contact with said jawand act as the fulcrum therefor; whereupon "the wing nut is turned or spun by hand, without losingthe precision of contact with the work. The
wing' nut is heavy enough and the 1 wingsare long enough to provide'for rapid spinning'thereof and for good: leverage, and under normal conditions it can: be tightehedfirmly by hand to produce a. tight clamping .efiect; however, this wing. nutfasewell as the angular nut, are
both shaped and adapted for the additional use of a 'wrench' aswellas pliers, and furthermore arealso'arranged for use of a lever bar to eflect extremely tight clamping of the jaws upon the work.
I claim:
A'cla'mp consisting of an upper and a lower jaw having straight innerfaces provided at the.
rear end with corresponding notches, the upper jaw being providedwith flared openings, a pair of bolts mounted in the lower jaw to be fiush with the bottom thereof, thereby providing a smooth and unobstructed leye'l bottom on the clamp adaptingit to be rested thereon ona level surface, elements mounted with a driving fit I tin/said bolts and lower jaw for securing said bolts rigidly but removably in said jaw, a wing nut mounted on the forward bolt upon the upper ja'w,and a nut with angular exterior mounted FENWICK L. ELLIS.
.on the other bolt and positioned'within said notches intermediate the jaws to facilitate
