Application led August 29, 1919, Serial No. 320,650. Renewed September 16, 1920. SerialL No. 410,745.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL P. SCHWARZ, a
citizen of the United States, residing at St. Y
Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State 'of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches of that character in which a stationary jaw member is carried by a threaded rack handle bar, a movable jaw member is slidable back and forth on said bar to roughly adjust the jaws to any size nut or bolt head, and a screwv rotatably arranged in the movable jaw member is releasably disposed under spring tension to engage or disengage the threads of said rack bar for closely adjusting `the movable aw to the nut or bolt head to be engaged or releasing the movable jaw to quickly remove the wrench from the nut or bolt head.
More particularly this invention relates to an improved construction of the movable jaw member whereby greater strength is produced and the parts may be more easily separated for making repairs.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation of my invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the movable jaw member, and Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In the drawing let A indicate the sta-I through which the handle bar passes, wheren by said jaw member D may slide freely on said bar. These jaw members may or may not be formed with pipe engaging members Gr and H (see broken lines in Fig. 1) as desired. The movable jaw member is formed with a rearwardly extending body 10 in which is a transverse opening 11 above the teeth C on the handle bar in which opening is rotatably mounted the adjusting screw F which is accessible through the sides of the movable jaw member for turning by hand. Thus there is formed above the screw a bar 12 which reinforces the structural strength of the movable jaw member, thel structure resembling a yoke spanning the screw and reducing any tendency to bind the screw.
The screw has a shaft 13 fixed on its axis, the ends of which resemble. trunnions which revolve freely in vertical or guide passageways 111 and 15 in the body 10, the opening 15 extending rearwardly so that the shaft may be inserted in the screw after the latter has been placed in the opening 11.o Positioned above the trunnions on the screw are a pair of receptacles 16 and 17 which hold a pair of helical springs 18 and 19 pressing down upon the trunnions. These springs releasably hold the screw with its threads engaging the threads of the handle bar.
The threads of the screw and handle bar are substantially square in cross section to prevent any tendency to disengage when the jaws are applied under pressure to turn a nut, bolt or pipe. The springs are removable from their receptacles by removing threaded coverpieces 20 in the outer ends of the receptacles.
The yoke shaped structure constituting the body of the movable jaw member with the pair of equally deep spring holding receptacles closed by removable covers constitutes a unique, strong and effective jaw member.
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claim.
I-Iaving described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A wrench, comprising, in combination, a
tending guide passage and a pairV of outwardly extending spring holdmg receptacles open at their outer f ends to receive springs and connecting With said guide passage, a screw in said yoke having gudgeons revoluble in and movable outwardly in said guide passage from the side of said handle bar in said yoke, a coil spring in each of said receptacles against said gudgeons and releasably urging said screw with its 10 In testimony whereof, I have-signed my 15 name to this speceaton.
