The invention relates to new and useful irnprovements in a pocket book muff bed.

The primary obj ect of the invention resides in the construction of' a pocket book muif bed which includes a gate frame usually of six main hinged parts but possible of indenite number, to which the suitable pocket book muff is attached in such a manner as to conceal and completely cover said frame and pocket in the muif and without detracting from the appearance of the muff.

The invention also proposes a muff having a horizontal longitudinal passage extending from end to end for ones hands, a pocket adjacent said passage, and accessible at its mouth thru the upper part of the muff, and means for opening and closing said pocket.

Another object of the invention is to provide in combination with a muff a concealed gate frame which when open for the purpose of inserting or extracting articles therethru, does not pivot downwardly, thereby leaving the pocket open subjecting the contents of the pocket to possible loss and deterring from the appearance of the muff, but remains in its normal horizontal plane position thus preserving the general smooth contour of the muff and of the materials which enter into the construction of the muil. Such construction also serves to reenforce the muff. Pocket book muis made of soft materials such as cloth or fur have been of the collapsible type. This collapsible feature of pocket book muifs has been detrimental from the standpoint of appearance, convenience in use and safety of the contents of the pocket. I have found that a construction assuring rigidity of the muff and pocket entrance is most desirable in the trade.

With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel construction and combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a device constructed according to this invention.

Figure 3 is a horizontal or plan fragmentary view showing only the outer surface of the frame covered.

The pocket book muil consists of a muil bed 10, having a horizontal longitudinal passage ll, extending from end 12, to end 13, for ones 5 hands, and pocket 14, being arranged adjacent said passage 11. An incision is formed in the top of the muil bed 10, and cloth or other soft material 15, inserted into the incision which constitutes the pocket 14. Of course several l0 compartments can be arranged in said pocket.

The means for closing the pocket 14, consist of a gate frame 14', consisting of a plurality of coacting members attached to lip member 16, of the pocket book bed 10. On one of these 15 coacting members 17 of the frame 14', is mounted a lug 18, that engages with a spring actuated catch 19, mounted on another oppositely-positioned coasting member of the frame. Outwardly moving the upper end of catch 19, will 20 readily release the locking device. While other locking devices may be used I prefer to use a type which does not have an exposed handle.

I have shown the method of attaching the bag to the frame and of the frame covered partly and wholly by the upper parts of the pocket book bed. The lip 16, and pocket book bed l0, and

21, and 22, are fastened together as at 23, Fig. 2. The lip is inserted into the jaws 20, of the frame 14 and permanently or removably fastened thereto by means of rivets, bolts and nuts, or other means. To conceal and cover the frame and thereby aid in the appearance of the pocketbook and prevent lacerating the hands, caused when exposed or protruding rough or sharp parts of the metallic frame are contacted, the upper parts of the bed are extended thereover as at 25.

While I have shown the method of assembling but one layer of material, several secured together might be used. A covering material of fur or leather or other material may be fastened to the bed 10 when the body has been made up as described. Padding material of suitable kind may be inserted in the spaces between the pocket, passage, and outer covering.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein described and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and novel and wish to protect by Letters Patent is,

1. A pocket book muff bed having a horizontal passage extending from end to end for ones hands, a pocket adjacent said passage and accessible thru the mouthbf the muff bed, means for closing, opening and locking said pocket, said opening means being fastened to a separate lip extending upwardly from the pocketbook muff bed, said lip iitting between and being fastened to the jaws of said opening means, and said opening and closing means being set below the uppermost outer part of the muff bed which extends thereover so as to entirely conceal the said opening and closing means.

2. A pocket book muff bed having a horizontal passage extending from end to end for ones hands, a pocket adjacent said passage `and accessible thru the mouth of the muff bed, means for closing, opening and locking said pocket, said opening and closing means being actuatable on a horizontal plane when the pocket book is in the normal position, said opening means being fastened to a separate lip extending upwardly from the pocketbook muf bed, said lip ttng between and being fastened to the jaws of said opening means, and said opening and closing means being set below the uppermost outer part of the muff bed which extends thereover so as to entirely conceal the said opening and closing means.

3. A pocket book muli bed having a horizontal passage extending from end to end for ones hands, a pocket adjacent said passage and accessible thru the mouth of the muti bed, means for closing, opening and locking said pocket, said opening and closing means being Yactuatable in a horizontal plane when the pocket book is in the normal position, said opening means being fastened .to a separate lip extending upwardly from the pocketbook muff bed, said lip fitting between and being fastened to the jaws ofrsaid opening means, and said opening and closing means being set below the uppermost outer member of the muif bed which extends thereover so as to be concealed thereby in closed position.
