This invention relates to golf bags, and par ticularly that type of bag employing a hood secured over the top thereof for enclosing and looking the clubs when not in use or traveling.

In golf bags employing hoods, it has been the practice to secure the hood inside of the bag so that when not in use it may be tucked inside and out of the way when the bag is used during the playing of the game. This arrangement, however, is not entirely satisfactory since the positioning of the hood within the bag interferes with the convenient manipulation of the clubs and furthermoreit cannot thus be positioned when the bag is provided with pockets for receiving different groups of clubs. It has also been the practice toarrange the hood on the outside of the bag so that it may be skinned down below the mouth when not in use: In this'position it embraces the exterior of the bag and presents acumbersome and unattractive appearance and bulkiness. So far as is known, the above two arrangements comprise the only methods of disposing of the hood when not in use other than whenthe hood is completely detachable.

It is one of the purposes of this invention to provide a hood for a golf bag which is secured thereto and a part thereof, which hood will neither be turned inside of the bag to interfere with manipulation of the clubs nor skinned down over the outside of the bag for presenting'a cumbersome and unsightly appearance. On the other hand, it is here contemplated that the bag be provided with a bag member for carrying the clubs and an outer covering or pocket between T which the hood, formed in two flaps may be embraced so that it is completely concealed and out of the way.

Another feature of the invention resides in the arrangement of a bag member and outer covering such that the member may be employed to support the clubs and the partitions for groups of clubs, when desired, while the outer covering may be employed to conceal any stitching of partitions to the lining, enclose the hood and provide a pocket extending substantially the full length of the bag for carrying other equipment, such as sweaters, rain coats, clothing and the like.

A still further feature resides in the provision of a raw hide bead and cuff extending about the bottom of the bag for protecting the same against wear.

The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims:

Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the bag with one flap of the hood up and the other folded down and the outer covering of the back open. Fig. 4 is the same as Fig. 2 showing the'outer cover open and the hood folded down therein. Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view of a portion of the open top and bottom of the bag. Fig. 6 is' an enlarged plan view of the handle reinforcing strip.

In the drawings there is illustrated a golf bag Ill having the usual ball pocket it and handle 2 with a hood secured to theupper end thereof formed of the flaps iii and M; said flaps being formed with cutaway portions E5 to provide clearance for the handle and shoulder strap connection. The flaps I3 and it of the hood are secured together by the hookless fastener or zipper l6 starting at the cutaway portion l5 and extending over the top of the hood, terminating? in the looking device indicated: at ll.

Each flap it and M of the hood is secured along its bottom edge to the upper edge of the pocket or cover i8, on the underside thereof, which. surrounds a bag member 19, and is slit down the side opposite the handle from adjacent the top to adjacent the bottom to permit opening and closing thereof through the medium of the hookless fastener or zipper strip 2% terminating in the locking device Ila. The upper edge of the cover H3 is detachably secured to a short depending flap 2! on the mouth 22 of the bag by the hookless fasteners or zippers 23 beginning adjacent the handle l2 on each side thereof and extending about the periphery of the bag.

The interior of the bag may be provided with partitions 24 stitched to the bag member l9, as indicated at 25, such stitching of the partitions 24' being entirely enclosed and covered by the flaps of the cover l3 when in closed position.

That portion of the bag to which the handle I2 is secured is reinforced so as to render it stiff and rigid by means of the U-shaped wire 26 enclosed within the leather backing 2'5 which is stitched and riveted to the cover 68 but free of the member H9. The bottom of the bag is provided with a heavy stiff leather cuff 28 to which the cover it and member 59 are secured, and to which the bottom piece 29 is fastened. For protecting the bottom of the bag, and particularly the leather cuff 28, a raw hide strip 3!) is secured thereto and turned upwardly and inwardly about the metal ring 3| to provide a protective bead. At the top of the bag a stifi leather cuff 32 has secured about the upper edge thereof a protective raw hide strip 33 covering a metal reinforcing ring 34.

20 and 23, and the flaps l3 and M of the hood are turned up over the clubs and secured by the fastener l6, whereupon the cover is turned back and the fastener 2%) closed. With the fastener in this position, the padlock or the like may look the locking devices ll, Ha. If desired, wearing apparel or the like may be packed within the cover l8, since ample room is provided therein due to the fact that the member I9, preferably made of canvas, is collapsible around the clubs. When it is desired to use the clubs in playing golf, the fasteners i6 and 20 are opened, the cover l8 spread apart, and the flaps l3 and M turned downwardly inside of the cover, whereupon the cover may be again closed about the flaps of the hood and the fasteners 26 and 23 closed. In this condition, the hood will be completely enclosed within the cover but exteriorly of the member in which the clubs are contained so as not to interfere there with.

The invention claimed is:

1. A golf bag comprising open top and closed bottom sections, a bag member permanently connected at its opposite ends to said sections for re-- ceiving a plurality of golf clubs through the open section, a cover substantially conforming with and embracing said member when in closed position, said cover being secured about said member at the bottom section and removably fastened thereto adjacent the top section, said cover also being provided with a longitudinally extending opening running from the upper end to adjacent the lower end thereof, and a detachable fastener element for fastening the upper edge of the cover to said member and securing the cover in closed position throughout its longitudinally extending opening.

2. A golf bag comprising open top and closed bottom sections, a bag member extending therebetween and permanently secured thereto at its ends for receiving a plurality of golf clubs through the top section, a cover on said bag member to provide a pocket in conjunction therewith and provided with a detachable fastener for permitting it to be opened or closed, and a hood for enclosing the exposed ends of the clubs adapted to be folded down when not in use between said bag member and cover pocket, so as to be enclosed thereby.

3. A golf bag comprising open top and closed bottom sections, a bag member extending therebetween and permanently secured thereto at its ends for receiving a plurality of golf clubs through the top section, a cover on said member adapted to form a pocket on both sides thereof and in conjunction therewith, said cover being provided with detachable fasteners for permitting it to be opened and secured in closed position, a hood for enclosing the exposed ends of the clubs formed of oppositely disposed flaps adapted to be separated and folded down on each side of the bag member to be enclosed between said member and the cover pocket when not in use, and detachable fastening means positioned about the adjacent edges of the flaps for securing them together when the hood is extended into club covering position.

4. A golf bag comprising open top and closed bottom sections, a substantially tubular bag member extending between said sections and permanently connected thereto for receiving a plurality of golf clubs through the open section, a cover for providing a pocket substantially conforming With said bag member when in closed position, said cover being provided with a detachable fastener for securing it about said member at its upper edge, detachable fastening means extending longitudinally of said bag member for permitting said cover pocket to be opened lengthwise thereof, a pair of cooperative hood flaps secured adjacent the upper edge of the cover so as to extend over the top section to provide a hood when in one position and be foldable downwardly on each side of the bag member and within the cover pocket when in the other position, and a fastening element for removably securing said flaps together to form the enclosing hood when extending over the top section.

5. A golf bag comprising open top and closed bottom sections, a bag member permanently secured between said sections for receiving a plurality of golf clubs, and an outer covering secured to one of said sections and removably fastened to the other section for enclosing said bag member and providing a pocket therebetween.

6. A golf bag comprising open top and closed bottom sections, a bag member extending therebetween and permanently secured thereto at its ends, a plurality of partitions stitched through said member and extending substantially the full length thereof for receiving separate groups of golf clubs through the top section, and a cover substantially conforming to said member and removably secured to one of said sections for enclosing the outer surface of said member to which the partitions are secured.

'7. A golf bag comprising open top and closed bottom sections, a bag member extending therebetween and permanently secured thereto at its ends for receiving a plurality of golf clubs through the top section, a pocket member secured exteriorly of said bag member and provided with a fastener for permitting it to be opened or closed with respect to said bag member, and a hood member extensible from said open top section of the bag adapted to be folded down when not in use between said bag and pocket member so as to be enclosed thereby.
