The invention is illustrated inthis application as applied to a machine of the type shown and described in the patent to HarryD. Cumfer and Owen D. McFarland,- No. 1",25'7',321'datedFeb. 26, 1918. knife and support were originally made of tool steel and were therefore expensive to manufacture. The principal objects of the present invention are to improve the construction of devices forcutting slots in sheet'roofing material in the formation of shingle simulating strips and to produce a construction for such devices in' whi'eh it shall not benecessary to throw away theknife' support with the knife and to'provide a new knife support and knife when a knife has been rendered unfit for further'use.
With the above object in view a feature of the present invention consists in the-provision of'a" construction in which the knif'eis removably effected quickly and easily bythe operator or by an ordinary mechanic."
The above and'other' features of the invention will be clearly understood from the accompanying drawing illustrating the invention in its preferred form and the following detailed description of the construction -'therein'-show1r.-

The machine illustrated in Figs. 1- and 2 isof the same general'type as that illustrated and described in Patent" No. 1,2573'21 referred to above. Th2 machine comprises' -opposed cooperating slitting ro1lers 2 and 4--between which the sheet roofing material is passed, said-sheet being drawn from a roll 6 of thematerial mounted on a spindle 8. The slitting rollers-slitthe slieet material intoa series of relatively narrow strips.
The strips of sheet material pass from the slitting rollers between the knifecarrying roller 10 and the opposed roller 12 cooperating with. the knife carrying roller; Upon'the knife car rying roller are -mounteda series of 'slot cutting knives whichcut'transverse slots in the strips;

The'strips are feclforwardby the action of the opposed feed rollers 14, these rollers drawing the material pastthe slitting-rollers and the rollers 10 and '12;
The knife carrying roller 10- carries a series of knives indicated-at 16. Eachof these knives is formed in one piece and has-the shape shown in Figures 3"to 5 inclusive: As shown in these figures, the body 16 of theKknife-ii's' bent into=the form of an elongated O, the ends 18 of the: knife body being in abutting relation. The. knife-- is formed with a substantially U-shaped cutting blade 20- which cuts correspondingly, shaped slots in thes'trips offroofing material. The blade is formed with substantially parallel side portions for cutting the sides of a slot and with a curved portion connecting the side portions for cutting the end of the slot. 1
The knife is removably mounted upona 'su port indicated at 22. The Support consists of a block having a series of holes 24 therein through which are passed screws 26 for securing the same to the knife carrying roller. The knife against which the inner edge of the knife rests when in position on the support. The knife is removably secured in place on the support by means of a series of screws 32' passing through openings in the support and threaded into the body of the blade.
By means of the above construction the knives are removably held securely in position on the respective knife supports. A knife may be quickly and easily removed from its support and another knife may as quickly and easily. be secured in operating position on the support without removing the support from the roller 10. It will be noted that the parallel side portions of the knife areconnected by an integral curved portion of the knife and that the ends'18 of the knife body are in abutting relation when the knife is secured in place on the support. By reason of this construction the holding screws 32 are relieved, to a large degree of strain. A
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the particular construction'and arrangement of parts of the illustrated embodiment of the invention but that the construction shown is merely illustrative of the invention and that the invention may be embodied in various other forms within the scope of the claims.
What is claimed as new is:
v 1. In a device for slotting sheet material a knife support having a knife receiving recess a knife mounted in said recess, said knife having a U-shaped edge portion and a body portion integral therewith, said bodyhaving two ends extending respectively beyond the ends of the U into mutually abutting relation, and means for removably securing the knife in the recess.
2. In a device for cutting slots in sheet material, a knife support having an abutment for the rear edge of the knife, a knifehaving substantially parallel side cutting blades and an end cutting blade and a body common to said blades, said knife being mounted on said support with its rear edge engaging said abutment, said body having portions extending beyond said parallel blades at the ends thereof remote from the end blade and having the ends of said extensions 'abutting,-and means for removably securing the knife in place on the support.
3. In a device for cutting slots in sheet-material a knife support, a slot cutting knife removably mounted on said support, said knife being formed of one piece with the confronting ends of thev piece in strain resisting mutually abutting relation when so mounted in said support.
4. In a devicefor cutting slots in sheet material, a knife support, a one piece knife having blades for cutting the sides of a slot and a blade for cutting one end of the slot, said knife having a portion formed for fitting engagement with said support and provided with two ends mutually abutting in strain-resisting relation when the knife is in fitting engagement with said support, and means for removably securing said knife in position on the support.
5. In a device for cutting slots in roofing material a knife support, anelongated O-shaped knife removably mounted on the support, said knife being formed in one piece with the ends of the piece mutually abutting to close the 0 and in strain-resisting relation, and means for securing the knife in position on the support.
6. In a device for slotting sheet material, a knife support having a knife receiving recess shaped to, receive an elongated O-shaped knife and provided with an abutment for engagement with the rear edge of the knife, an elongated O-shaped knife in one piece removably mounted in said recess with its rear edge engaging said abutment, said O-shaped knife forming an annulus parted at one point in the circumference thereof to form ends of the piece having end surfaces transversely to the circumference of the annulus and abutting each other, and means for securing the knife in position on the support.
'7. A knife for cutting holes in sheet material, said knife being formed as an annulus from one piece of material having two ends with said two ends of the piece confronting each other and meeting'in the annulus in strain resisting mutually abutting relation.
8. A knife for cutting holes in sheet material, said knife being formed as an annulus from one piece of material having two ends with the end faces of said two ends of the piece meeting in a plane transverse to the annulus in strain-resisting mutually abutting relation.
9. In combination with a cutting roller for cutting slots in a continuously delivered sheet of material, a knife formed of one piece having a pair of blades extending generally parallel to each other and a blade transversely of said parallel blades, said blades providing a continuous cutting edge, said knife having a body portion formed for fitting engagement with a recess in said roller, said recess being so formed as to position said parallel blades generally parallel to the axis of the roller, said body portion of said knife adjacent one end of the parallel blades being formed with two ends having end faces mutually abutting in a plane generally parallel to said parallel blades and in strainresisting relation.
10.. In combination with a cutting roller for cutting slots in a continuously delivered sheet of material, a knife support removably attached to said roller and having a knife receiving recess therein, a knife formed of one piece having a pair of blades extending generally parallel to each other and a blade transversely of said parallel blades, said blades providing a continuous cutting edge, said support being so mounted upon said .roller that said parallel blades extend generally parallel to the axis of the roller, said knife having a body portion formed for fitting engagement with said support when mounted in said recess and formed with two ends adjacent one end of the parallel blades mutually abutting in strain-resisting relation when theknife is mounted in said support.
