E. EDEL. Truss.
No. 198,586. A Patented Dec. 25,1877.

IMPROVEM ENT IN TRUSSES.
Speeiiication forming part o; Letters PatentNo. 198,586, dated December 25, 1877 application filed l j July 14,1876,
` i' To all whom it mayiconcem: y l
Be it knownthatI, EMIL EDEL, ofthej'city of Hanover, ,in the :Kingdom of Prussia, Germau Empire, have inventedv anewfandwIm- *"proved Method offOons'tructing Vandi "Manufacturing Trusses, of which the following1isa specification; 4 `-1f Thisinvention relatesto certainfiinprovel ments in trusses for hernia andfother-com-I l plaintsof a similar nature; band itisfspeciall'y "designed to. overcomelthe objectlonablefand f injurious qualities of `the rigidspringy bodyband.
The invention; consists informing the truss spring or band fa series of plates, which are j connected with eachother by means-.of studs or rivets and interlocking tongues, thusproducingv a springjbandjof jointed or ilegible sections, whichlwilljyield to the ever-changing and` unequal motions off the body of the wearer, and not vexert fthe un'duejpressure of I the ordinary spring-band.
In the accompanyi `4g'drgnvings,fl-.ligure is j j a topk view of a trussypossessingmyi improved ,l spring. Fig.2 isa side view of thevsamegand Fig. 3 isa detail vi` w= of,'one offthe plates ",formingthe spring;Uff` j if; It is Ya well-,known fact, demonstrated by experience, `that thev ordinary trussi spring or body-beudisnanumber 0f ces'esebsolutely 11 injurious to the 'wearerjof thetruss, forjits *pressure is solgreataand unremitting that it 1 A will injure theperso and produce'anienlargef `:ment of the ruptur Anotherdisadva My invention removesthe objections ofi-the,` ordinary spring, forbymaking thel same of" a Y l number of plates onsections', A, jointed to! i l gether, I produce a spring whichwill lyield a readily to all muscular movements ofthe body,
and yet exert sufficient pressure to hold the pad B securely in place.
The plates composing the spring are provided with studs, or rivets a, which enter a hole, c, in the end of a contiguous plate. This mode of uniting the plates will cause the same to have a free movement in a horizontal direction. However, that no displacement out of this horizontal position may occur, and the tting to the body may be preserved throughout in an equal degree, the plates composing the spring are connected by means of tongueshaped projections C, which are formed on one end of the plate, so as to enter a slit or opening, D, in the end of an adjacent plate, and lie llat upon the same.
The truss-spring is covered with -.a suitable fabric, E, so as to remove the spring from direct contact with the body of the wearer.
A truss-spring made according to my invention can be used in the construction of trusses for inguinal hernia, hernia femoralis, and in navel-trusses, and whether the truss is single or double it will be equally eiiective.
The pressure of the spring is also sufficient to enable the customary thigh-strap to be dispensed with.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a series of plates, A, having studs ,holes c, projecting tongues C,
and slits D, with a pad, B, and suitable flexible Y attaching-strap, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EMIL EDEL.

EDWARD C. MAC LEAN.
