Definitions

  • This invention relates to safety razors 'and more particularly to safety razors of the type having a foldable or collapsible handle which serves also as a container or casing of a shape suitable to display advertising matter, and which may be manufactured cheaply enough to be sold at a nominal price or given away as an advertisement and it is an object of this invention to provide an improved razor of the type.
  • the flexible material forming the casing or handle is creased or scored so as to fold in a manner forming a substantially rigid handle when in use without materially lessening the facility with which it folds in order to form the container or casing when not in use. It is also an object of this invention to provide an improved blade holder which secures the blade in proper position for use.

  • a safety razor con-- structed in accordance with this invention coinprises a single-edged-blade 1 which may be ofv or creases 22 diverge from the ends of the slot edges of the sheet 3.
  • the blade holder 2 may be formed from sheet. metal and has the usual guard portion 4,; clips 6 which arestamped out of the body 5 of the blade holder and aid in positioning the blade, 10
  • the blade holder is alsoprovided with a. lug or boss 14 which prolecm upwardly from the blade holder 2 to engage in an opening in the blade 1 and prevent removal of the blade from the holder.
  • the sheet 3 is provided with perforations 16 to receive the tongues 8 and 12 and is scored or creased so as to cause the sheet to fold in a predetermined way when used as a handle.
  • the scorings 18 may be parallel, extending longitudinally of the sheet adjacent the center thereof and ending at parallel slots 20 and 21 which extend transversely of the sheet. From the ends of the slot 20 extend the scores or creases 22 which diverge to the side edges of the sheet 3 slot 20 to the slot 21', the slot 21 in this case being of greater length than the slot 21. Scores 20 to the side edges of the sheet while the creases 23 diverge from the ends of slot 21 to the end of the sheet.
  • the modification shown in Figure 7 will, under these conditions, provide a handle having a substantially fiat ion-t gitudinally extending center portion included between the slots 20 and 21 and the parallel longitudinally extending creases 18, while the side portions 19 of the sheet outside of the creases 18 form longitudinally extending flanges.
  • the portion 1800f the sheet comprised between the creases 18 provides stiffness for the handle against lateral bending while the side portions 19 provide stifiness against bending in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the portion 180 so that the sheet, when folded, gives a rigid handle of substantially a hollow beam shape, with the portion 180 as the web.
  • Figures 14 to 17 show that the modification of Figure 8 assumes substantially the same shape as that of the modification of Figure 7 when folded as a handle except that the portion 180' comprised between the scores or creases l8 tapers towards the blade holder, but as in the previous modification, this portion'provides stifiness against lateral bending and the side portions 19' provide stifiness in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the portion 180.
  • the portions 18012. of the sheet comprised between the side creases or scores 1% and the center crease 18a taper and are inclined to the central score or crease 18a, but in' this modification, as in the others, the position-of the portions 180a pro vides stifiness against later bending and the sideportions 19a provide stiffness in a direction substantially perpendicular to the plane of the portions 180a.
  • the scores or creases 22 extend the portions 19, 19' and 19a beneath the portions secured to the bladeholder 2 so as to support these portions when the razor is in use and the divergence of these scores gives a tapering of the side portions which causes the blade holder 2 to be inclined to the handle at the most eflective angle for use of the razor.
  • a safety razor including a sheet of flexible material having a told at one end forming a blade receiving pocket and the remainder of said sheet-having spaced scores or creases extending longitudinally thereof to shape said sheet as a beam resisting lateral bending when folded along said scores or creases for use as a handle,
  • said sheet having means extending between said creases and defining part of an end of the beam.
  • a safety razor including a sheet of flexible material having a fold at one end to form a pocket receiving a blade and the remainder of said sheet'having spaced scores or creases extending longitudinally thereof to shape said sheet as a beam resisting lateral bending when folded along said creases for use as a handle and slots extending between said creases and separating parts of the ends of said beam from 7 said sheet.
  • a safety razor including a sheet of flexible material having a fold at one end to form a pocket receiving a blade and the remainder of said sheet having spaced scores or creases extending longitudinally thereof to shape said sheet as a beam resisting lateral bending when folded along said creases for use as a handle, a slot extending between said creases and separating part of an end of said beam from the sheet and creases along which the sheet tends to fold when in use as a handle diverging from the ends of said slot.
  • a safety razor including a sheet of flexible material having a fold at one end to form a pocket receiving a blade and having the remainder of said sheet form a handle, said handle having a central longitudinally extending crease and side creases spaced from said central crease, said side creases diverging toward the free end of said handle and with said central crease shaping said sheet as a beam resisting lateral bending when saidsheet is folded along said creases for use as ahandle.
