Description

CyL. BRADLEY. Undersut.
N. 198,505. Patented Dec. 25,1877.
Inventor L @MZ a female ligure.
'UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
CLARA L. BRADLEY, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.V
IMPROVEMENT IN UNDER-SUITS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,505, dated December 25, 1877; application iiled November 10, 1877.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARA LYNDE BRAD- LEY, of the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented an Improved Combination Under-Suit and do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention without further invention or experime My invention relates to an improved combination suit or under-garment for male and female wear, which I call a chemjlette 5 and it consists in the employment of three patterns for each half of the garment, which are cut, sewed together, and adapted to fit the form as hereinafter more fully described.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l represen ts the chemilette adapted to Fig. 2 is a pattern of half of front. Fig. 3 is a pattern of half of back, and Fig. 4 is a pattern of half of side piece.
The half of front, Fig. 2, extends -from the front opening of the garment, and is united to the side piece, Fig. 4, by a seam, which extends down under the arm to the waist, at which point I give a spring, to accommodate larger size of the body around the hips. These two patterns extend down, so as to form one leg of the garment.
The side piece, Fig. 4, is cut narrow to the hips, and is made quite full behind, so as to overlap the back piece, Fig. 3, at the rear opening. The back piece is made wide back of the shoulders, and tapers toward the waist, from which it again widens, being cut nearly straight on one side, and wide on the other. The straight side I sew to the side piece on one side, while its opposite or projecting edge forms a flap for covering the edge of the opposite side piece.
When the garment is made for female wear, I make a dart, a, under each arm, and another, b, a short distancein front of it, as represented, so as to give a close, snug fit; but in cutting the pattern for gentlemens wear the darts will not be required.
I thus employ six pieces in constructingthe garment. The patterns are simple and easily cut, and they form a tight, close-itting garment. These garments have heretofore been made loose or sacque-fitting; but my patterns are intended to fit the form exactly.
It will be noticed that the seam which unites the back piece with the side piece passes down over the buttock, instead of straight down the side, as heretofore, thereby enabling me to give a greater amount of spring, so that the suit will rest perfectly easy on the lower part of the body, while the upper part is tight-fitting.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The patterns 2, 3, and 4, forming each half of the garment, cnt the whole length of the garment, and of the configuration shown, sewed together, and adapted to fit the form, substantially as herein shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
CLARA LYNDE BRADLEY. [L. s.]
