This invention relates to hinge connections for water closet seats and covers, one object of the invention being toprovide a simple Construction of hinge elements adapted to be connected to the hopp r, seat and cover in such a manner that the hopper may be located closer to the usual wall, tank or other element in the rear of the hopper and at the same time cause the seat and cover to assume such angles when raised that they will remain in their raised position.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means whereby the ofiset supporting posts are prevented from movement about their vertical axes.
These objects are attained by the mechanism shown in the accompanying drawings.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, one preferred form thereof is illustrated in the drawings, this form having been found to give 20 be understood that the various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized, and the invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organiza tion of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described except as required by the scope of the appendedclaims.

Each end plate 15 is curved as indicated in Figs. 2, 3 and 6, and at its upper end has formed integral therewith a laterally extending pintle 16. r r e The pintles 16 of the two end plates 15 extend toward each other into metal sockets 17 in' the opposite sides of the rear end of a cover 18.

By thus mounting the end plates 15 on the seat 14,' the endplates 15 will always move with the seat 14 when said seat is being raised or lowered., v 4
Each end p1ate15 has a fiat sided opening 20' therein into which extends areduced fiat sided projeotion 21 formed' upon a oylindrical member 22 extending through the cylindri'cal hole 13 in one of the supports 11.
` The members`22 form trunnions for 14' The outer end of each oylindrical member` 22 is provided with an enlarged head 23; the inner the seat e face of which bears against the outer face of the upper end 12 of a support 11; I The seat 14 is provided with a oylindrical hole 24 extending transversely of its rear end, and in this hole 24 are disposed oylindrical projections 25 formed upon the members 22.
The inner ends of these members25 contact with each other and are welded together as indicated at 26 so that the members 22 'cannot be separated from the end plates 15.
When thus mounted the members 23 will always turn with the seat 14 within the cylindrical holes 13.
Instead of welding together the adjacent ends of the members 25 these members 25- may besecured together in any other well known manner without affecting the principles of the invention.
Owing to the members 22 being provided with the enlarged heads 23, the supports 11 cannot turn about the axes of the shanks 27 thereof which extend downwardly through a rear portion of the hopper 10. y
Instead of having the members' 22' provided With the projections 25, these members 22 may be secured to the seat 14 by means of screws 28 extending therethrough into the seat as indi-" cated in Figs. 11, 12 and 13.
The projections 21 on the members 22 are preferably square and with inclined walls, as indicated in the drawings, thus providing a 'closer fit when inserted into the openings 20.
When the cover 18 is raised it will move about the axes of the pintles 16 into the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig, 2.
When the seat 14 is raised the cover 18 will be carried therewith and the seat 14 and cover 18 will assume the inclined position indicated in Fig. 3 and during the raising of seat 14 and cover 18 there will be no movement of these elements 14:, 18 relatively to each other.
By means of the Construction shown and described the member 22 forms a trunnion of considerable diameter, thus insuring a better wearing surface.
Furthermore, due to the constru'ction of the hinge connections herein shown and described, the hopper is adapted to be located Closer to a rear wall, tank or other element than would be the case with hinge connections now in general use.
This is of considerable advantage, where in small houses and apartments it is desired to save every inch of space.
When the elements are assembled and the projections 25 have been permanently joined together, it is impossible for any of the elements to get out of position.
It is believed that the operation and many advantages of the invention will be understood without further description.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, a pair of supports mounted on a hopper and having their upper ends curved forwardly and provided with alined cylindrical holes extending therethrough; a seat having a rearwardly extending projection; an end plate secured to each side wall of said projection and movable with said seat, each plate having a fiat sided opening therethrough; a cylindrical member extending from said seat projection through 'the hole of each support and having a reduced fiat sided portion fitting said opening; and means for permanently retaining said 'flat sided portion of said member in the fiat sided opening of said plate.
2. In a device of the class described, a pair of supports mounted on a hopper and having` their upper ends curved forwardly and provided with alined cylindrical holes extending therethrough; a seat having arearwardly extending projection; an end plate secured to each side wall of said projection and movable with said seat, each plate having a fiat sided opening therethrough; and a cylindrical member immovable endwise extending from said seat projection through the hole of each support and having a reduced flat sided portion fitting said opening and provided at its outer end with a shoulder contacting with the outer wall of a support.
3. In a device of the class described, a pair of supports mounted on a hopper and having their upper ends curved forwardly and provided with alined cylindrical holes extending therethrough; a seat having a rearwardly extending projection; an end plate having two prongs extending into each side of said projection and movable with saidseat, each plate having a fiat sided opening therethrough; and an immovable cylindrical member extending from said seat projection and provided with an enlarged cylindrical portion extending' through the hole of each support and having a reduced fiat sided portion fitting said opening, said cylindrical portion having a shoulder Contacting with the outer face of said plate.
4. In a-device of the class described, a pair of supports mounted on a hopper and having their upper ends curved forwardly and provided with alined cylin-dricalholes extending therethrough; a seat having a rearwardly extending projection; an end plate secured to each side 'wall of said projection and movable with said seat, each plate having a flat sided opening therethrough; an immovable cylindrical member extending from said seat projection through the hole of each support and having a reduced fiat sided portion fitting said opening; means for retaining said flat sided portion within the opening of said plate; and a cover pivoted to said end plates.
5. In a device of the class described, a pair of supports mounted in a hopper and having their upper ends curved forwardly and provided with alined cylindrical holes extending therethrough; a seat having a rearwardly extending projection; a curved end plate secured to each side wall of said projection and movable with said seat,-each plate having a fiat sided opening therein and a pintle' projecting from and integral with the-outer end thereof; an immovable cylindrical member extending from said seat projection through the hole of each support and having a reduced fiat sided portion fitting said opening; means for retaining said fiat sided portion within the opening of said plate; and a cover provided with oppositely dis'posed alined sockets to receive said pintles.
6. In a device of the class described, a pair of supports mounted on a hopper and having their upper ends curved forwardly and provided with alined cylindrical holes extending therethrough; a seat having a rearwardly extending projection; a curved end plate secured to each side wall of said projection and movable with said seat, each plate having a fiat sided opening therein and a pintle'projecting from and integral with the outer end thereof; an immovable cylindrical member extending from said seat projection through the hole of each support and having a reduced flat sided portion fitting said opening; means for retaining said fiat sided portion within the opening of said plate; and a cover provided with oppositely disposed alined metal cup-shaped sockets to receive said pintles.
7. In a device of the class described, a seat; a cover; two supports having their upper ends curved forwardly and provided with alined cylindrical holes extending therethrough; curved end plates provided at one end with projections embedded in said seat and at the opposite ends with pintles extending into said cover, said projections and pintles being integral with said plates; cylindrical members immovable endwise extending from said seat through the holes of said supports and having at their outer ends enlarged heads Contacting with the outer walls of said supports; and means on said cylindrical members for positively looking said cylindrical members to said end plates to insure the simultaneous movement of said plates and members.

In a device of the class described, a pair of supports mounted in a hopper and having their upper ends curved forwardly and provided with alined cylindrical holes extending therethrough; a seat having a'rearwardly extending projection; an end plate Secured to each side wall of said projection and movable with said seat, each plate having therein a square opening with inclined walls; an immovable cylindrical member extending from said seat projection through the hole of each support and having a reduced square portion with inclined sides fitting said opening; and means for permanently retaining said. square portion in said opening.

In a device of the class described, a pair of supports provided with shanks adapted to be nounted in a hopper and having their upper ends curved forwardly and provided with alined cylindrical holes extending therethrough; a seat having a rearwardly extending projection; an end plate securedto each side wall of said projection and movable with said seat, each plate having extending therethrough a fiat sided opening with inclined walls; a cylindrical member extending through the hole of each support and having at its inner end. a fiat sided reduced portion fitting said fiat sided opening and at its outer end. an enlarged head Contacting with the outer wall of a support; and a screw extending through each cylindrical member with its inner end threaded to said seat.
10. In a device of the class described, a pair of supports having shanks adapted to be mounted on a hopper and having their upper ends curved `forwardly and provided with alined cylindrical openings therein; a seat having a rearwardly extending projection; an end plate Secured to each side wall of said projection and movable with said seat, each plate having a fiat sided depression therein; a cylindrical member extending through the opening of each support and having a fiat sided portion fitting said depression; and means for permanently retaining said members, supports and plates, on said seat projection in operative position relatively to each other.
