Be it known that we, MARSHALL R. BRIT- TEN and CHESTER K. BmrrEN, citizens of the United States, residing` at Grants Pass, in the county of Josephine and State of Oreon, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Doorchecks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in door checks. Y
The primary object of this invention is the provision of check device, which may be utilized in connection with closure members, such as doors, in the facile retention of the closure member in the position in which -it is desired that the same be supported.
An important object of the invention. is the provision of a relatively simple and compact door check, which is particularly well adapted for large doors, such as garage doors, and which is novel in so far as the cooperative construction and arrangement of parts is concerned.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description.

Figure l is a perspective view of a closure member, showing the improved door check member as located therein and in position for holding the closure member in a desired manner.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary View, partly in section, showing the cooperative relation of the improved door check details and the closure member.
Figure 3 is a front elevation of certain details of the 'improved door check.
n the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown but the preferred embodiment of this invention, the letter A designates the improved door check adapted for use upon a swinging closure member B. The improved door check preferably comprises an attaching bracket 10, closure retaining element 11; spring 12; and means 13 for attaching of the door check A to the closure member B.
The attaching bracket is preferably of metal, and may be cast or bent to provide a Hat rectangular shaped attaching portion 15 having the walls 16 and 17 bent outwardly 1922. Serial No. 577,145.
therefrom in the same direction and preferably extending at right angles to the pla-ne defined by the attaching portion 15. These flange walls 16 and 17 extend from one end of the attaching bracket plate 15 to the other end and gradually slope outwardly from thc upper' and lower marginal edges 18 and 19 of the attaching plate 15, so that the intermediate portions of the walls 16 and 17 are of greatest width midway of the edges 18 and 19, as can readily be seen from Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings. A detachable bolt member 25 is preferably disposed transversely between the walls 16 and 17 of the attaching bracket 10, and engaged intermediate the ends of said walls through the portions of said walls 16 and 17 which are greatest removed from the attaching plate portion 15.
The closure member retaining element 11 is of spike like formation, and includes the relatively long shank 27 which is pointed, as at 28, at one end for ground'engaging purposes, and which is provided with a rounded head 29 upon its other end. At the juncture of the rounded end 29 and the shank portion 27 of the element 11, an aperture 30 is provided for pivotally receiving the bolt member 25, so that the closure member engaging element 11 may be oscillatively connected to the attaching bracket 10 with the rounded head portion 29 extending into the pocket of the bracket 10 intermediate the side walls 16 and 17. The head 29 is provided with a rounded margin 31, which is of cam like formation with respect to the pivot point 25 of the member 11, and is adapted for cooperation upon the spring 12, in a manner to be subsequently described.
The means 13 preferably comprises upper and lower bolts 35 and 36 respectively, which are adapted for cooperation in the apertures 37 and 38 respectively, disposed in the attaching plate portion 15 of the attaching bracket 10. adjacent the top and bottom marginal edges 18 and 19 respectively thereof. In the disposition of these bolt members 35 and 36 the heads 39 thereof extend outwardly from the attaching plate 15. The spring member 12 is of a. good grade of spring steel and is of arcuate formation, with the ends 411 and 42 thereof in sliding contact upon the exposed surface of the attaching plate 15, adjacent the projecting heads 39 of the bolts 35 and36 respectively. The bowed portion 43 ofthe s rin member 12 extends outwardly from t e p ate 15 in spaced relation thereto and toward the head 29 of the closure member retaining element 11, and with which'head 29 the bolt portion 43 of the said spring is always in contact.
ln the attachment of the improved device upon the closure member B, the bolts 35 and 36 are disposed in the attaching bracket 10 as above described, and inserted through suitable openings in the closure member B, so that nuts 45 may be adjusted upon said bolts 35 and 36 to secure the attaching plate 15 of the bracket 10 liat upon a surface of the closure member B with the walls 1G and 17 substantially in vertical position. ln this position, the retaining spike 1l may be swung in a vertical plane. 1f it is the desire of a pei-son to retain the closure member B in al set position, that person merely swings the spike 11 downwardly until the point 28 thereof is in engagement with the ground surface. 1n this position, the head portion 29 thereof is in engagement with the bolt portion L13 of the spring 12, which maintains the saine under compression, so that said spring 12 acting upon the head 29 will maintain the spike or retaining member 11 in a position against liability of displacem'ent. As above mentioned, the rounded surface 31 of the member 11 has a cam action upon the spring 12, and as the operator swings the same upwardly from the position illustrated in Figure 2, it can readily be seen that the bowed portion 43 of the spring member 12 will be further depressed toward the attaching plate 15 until the member 11 is in a horizontal position, and in which position the spring 12 is depressed to its farthest point. Upon upward swinging of the member 11 from its horizontal position, it can readily be understood that the action of the spring 12 upon the head 29 will be such as to retain the member 11 in any position. in which the same may be placed and against liability of displacement.
From the foregoing, it can be seen that a relatively simple door check has been provided, in which the retaining elements 35 and 36 thereof, cooperate not only in the retention of the bracket 10 upon the supporting closure member B, b-ut which cooperate with the sliding ends of the spring 12 in the retention 0f said spring 12 1n proper position upon the attaching bracket. The side walls 16 and 17, of coui'se, cooperate with the spring 12 in maintaining an accurate placement of the same in the pocket intermediate said walls 16 and 17. By reason of the loose disposition of the spring 12,
meneer the same -may be readily detached, either for replacement or manual adjustment so that the saine will exert a proper ,tension upon the member 11.
Various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be made to the form of the invention herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
We claim: 1. A door check, comprising an attaching bracket including a .relatively lat plate provided with side Walls extending outwardly substantially at right angles thereto throughout the length of said plate, said walls being of greatest Width intermediate the ends of said plate, a pin member connected transversely between said side walls and in spaced relation directly opposite the plate substantially midway of its ends, a retaining lever pivoted to said pin and including an elongated portion extending outwardly from said attaching bracket and having a rounded cam head portion extending opposite from said elongated portion of said lever into said attaching bracket intermediate the side flanges thereof, a bowed spring having the ends thereof in sliding engagement with the plate of said attaching bracket and the bowed central portion thereof in engagement with said cam head of the lever for normally maintaining said lever in a position in which the same is set.
2. In a door check, the combination with a closure member, of an attaching bracket including a relatively flat portion apertured at its ends, bolt members for disposition in said apertures for attaching said brackets to said closure member, the heads of said bolts extending outwardly from the exposed surface of said plate, said attaching bracket having side walls extending outwardly thereof substantially at right angles thereto, a lever having a spherical like head, means pivoting said lever to the outer portions of said side walls at the juncture point of said spherical head and the shank of said lever, and an arcuate spring member adapted for loose disposition within said attaching bracket with the ends thereof in sliding contact with the plate portion of said bracket and disposed adjacent the heads of said attaching bolts, the intermediate portion of said spring being in normal engagement with the spherical head of said lever whereby the spring is normally under tension to force said lever in a position in which the same is set.
