Description
Se t. 17, 1929. H.'L. FlNO V STAKE RETAINER Filed Feb. 28, 1929 Patented Sept. 17, 1929 UNITED STATES HENRY L. FIND, OF MILFORD, MASSACHUSETTS STAKE RETAINER Application filed. February 28, 1929.
This invention relates to an improved retainer for a stake such as is used upon wagons, trucks, and similar conveyances.
Briefly. the invention comprises a novel metallic fixture including a socket for reception of the stake and aspring pressed retaining latch carried thereby.
In carrying out the invention I have evolved and produced a structure of this character which is characterized by unusual simplicity and durability in construction, and which is otherwise made to render it highly eiiicient easy to manipulate, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes intended.
Other features and advantages will become .more readily apparent from the following description and drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the complete structure showing the stakes associated therewith.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken approximately upon the plane of the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a bottom ture seen in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the metal faced stake.
In the drawings the reference character 5 designates generallv the fixture or bracket. It comprises a single metal bod including a substantially U-shaped portion 6 which functions as 'a' socket or embracing strap for the stake 7. The reference character 8 design ates an attaching flange on one side and 9 similar attaching flange on the opposite side. Coonerable with the last named flange is a hollow box like portion 10 which funct ons as a housing or casing for a latch 11. This latch is pivotallv mounted on a horizontal pivot pin 12 and includes a laterallv directed end portion 13 forming a retaining finger. This is adapted for removable reception in plan view of the struca socket or keeper seat 14 formed in one side of the stake. In this connection it is to be observed that on this side of the stake is an embedded wear plate 15 having an opening therein in register with the socket. The latch is pressed into place automatically under the Serial No. 343,310.
action of a suitably anchored spring 16. The
spring surrounds the pivot pin as shown in Figure 1 and has one end bearing against the intermediate portion of the latch to swing the retaining finger normally into the socket. It is to be observed that the casing 10 is formed at 17 to form what may be designated as a shoulder. This allows the latch to be engaged behind the shoulder to withdraw the finger from the keeper socket and to hold the latch in a normally disengaged position as shown in dotted lines to the left in Figure 1.
In practice the fixture 5 is bolted through the medium of the flanges 8 and 9 on the body of the wagon thereby providing a socket for removable reception of the lower metal faced end of the stakes 7. The stake is dropped down in place. the latch is released and allowed to snap into retaining position. The latch has movement in a direction at right angles to its longitudinal axis. In other words. it may be moved on the pivot pin 12 in a direction against the tension of the spring in order that it may be engaged behind the shoulder 17 to hold it in released position.
The simplicity of the construction is such to enable the reader to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the detailed description in connection with the drawings. Therefore. a more lengthy description is regarded unnecessary.
Minor chan es in shape. size. and rearrangement of details coming within the field of invention. claimed may be resorted to in actual practice if desired.
Having thus described the invention. what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is As a new produ t of manufacture. a stake retaining device of the class described comprising a body having a substantially U- shaned intermediate portion functioning as a retaining socket for removable reception of the stake. said body having an attaching flange on each side of the socket, the body being also formed at the juncture of one side wall of the socket and the adjacent flange with a box like latch casing, a horizontal pivot bolt in said casing, a spring pressed latch mounted on said pivot bolt, said latch being movable in a direction at right angles to its longitudinal axis, whereby to permit it to be slid longitudinally of the pivot pin, and said casing being provided with an internal shoulder with which the shank portion of the latch is engageable, whereby to permit the latch to be retained in released position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
HENRY L. FINO.
