IMPROVEMENT IN TEMPORARY B'INDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters-Patent No. 197,469, dated November 27, 1877; application filed May 18, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD F. HOBART, of the city of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a Machine for the Purpose of Filing and Binding Letters and other Papers, of which I will proceed to give a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which is made part of this specification.
My binding-file consists of a wood or metal base, A, in which are securely fastened the spikes B B, the posts P P, and the rod R, and on which rests the clip 0, which also bears at the point L on a fulcrum that rises about half an inch from the base. per part of the posts P P passes the pin k, on which turns the follower F. The forward part 71. of the follower is pressed downward by' the upward force of the spiral spring S, which surrounds the rod It.
The clip 0 is designed to hold unanswered letters and other papers requiring attention, and retains them securely by the force of the spring S, which also presses against the under side of the follower.
To place a letter under the clip 0, it israised by pressing down upon the -end of thelever, which extends backward beyond the fulcrum at the point L.
Through the up- To file a letter, press down at the point 9 until the part 71. of the follower entirely clears the top of the spikes B B; then slip in the letter above the points of the spikes until the edge of the sheet touches the two stops 8. The follower is then released and drives down the letter well onto the spikes; By reason of the stops S S the letters are all driven on the spikes with an even margin.
To bind the book of letters, draw out the pin 70 and remove the follower; then draw out the loose ends of the string t from the eyes e c, and tie the string above the letters; then slip off the letters from the spikes, and the volume is ready to lay away.
I claim- 1. The pivoted spring-follower F, provided with the stops 8 and curved slotted foot h, in
combination with the spikes B Band base A, as shown and described.
2. The combination of the follower F, spikes B B, rod. R, spring S, clip 0, and base A, provided with the posts P P and fulcrum L, as
