A. DOM. PAPER 03 BILL FILE.
No. 451,729. Patented May 5,1891.
' alum-aw flu UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
ALEXANDER DOM, OF MOUNT HEALTHY, ASSIGNOR TO THE GLOBE COM- PANY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
PAPE R OR BILL FILE.
SPEGJ TIC ATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 451,729, dated May 5, 1891.
Application filed February '7, 1891- Serial No. 380,587. (No model.)
7 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER DOM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Healthy, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvernents in Paper or Bill Files, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The object of my invention is to produce a knockdown file for temporarily filing papers, the same to be cheap and simple of manufacture and at the same time afford an efficient file that may be placed at any position on an office-desk, ready of access. The partitions being detachably connected to the base, said partitions may be attached to the base in 'such a manner as to afford any desired size of compartment for the papers, and said partitions may be removed and packed separate from the base in shipment, as will more fully hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved file with a portion of the partitions in an operative position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the wire partitions detached from the base; and Fig. 3 is a crosssection through the base of a file embodying my invention, the same beingaslightmodification of that shown in Fig. 1.
My invention consists of the wire partitions A, bent in any desired shape, the lower terminal portions of said partitions having the angular extensions or' feet a for retaining said partitions in a vertical position. The base B has the other flanges b at each side thereof, said flanges at their outer edge having the grooves or recesses b therein, in which the vertical portions of the partitions A engage, the extensions a of said partitions engaging longitudinally beneath said flanges b, as shown, and in this manner said partitions are securely connected to said base in a vertical position. t
The base B is preferably formed entirely of metal, as shownin Fig. 1, but may be formed partly of wood, with metallic side flanges with openings therein, as shown in Fig. 3. It is preferred to have the flanges b curve inward, as shown, but they may be made to curve outward, if so desired.
The partitions A are preferably formed of spring-wire, the width att-he lower extremities of said partitions being equal to or a little greater than the width of the base, in order that the resiliency of said spring-partitions will retain the latter firmly to place within and beneath the flanges of the base. If the flanges be bent outward, the partitions will be formed to spring inward.
To remove one of the partitions, all that is required is simply to press the vertical extensions thereof until the angular extensions a are drawn from beneath the flange b, when said partition may be replaced in other recesses b or may be packed away for shipment.
The advantages of my improved file are at once apparent. The detachable and portable features are worthy of notice, while the means for connecting the partitions to the base are simple and effective in operation and cheap of manufacture. The angnlarextensions of said partitions, resting beneath the flanges of the base, afford a means for ,quickly connecting said parts and retaining the former in a vertical position to the latter. Any desired compartment may be formed between any two of the partition-wires.
- WhatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A file having a base with longitudinal flanges turned upward, said flanges having recesses in their outer edge, in combination with a partition having vertical portions terminating in angular feet, said vertical and I angular portions of the partition resting in and beneath,v said upturned flanges, for the purposes set forth.
2. A file having a base with longitudinal flanges turned upward and inward integral with said base, said flanges having recesses in their free edges, in combination with spring-partitions bent as shown and adapted to rest in and beneath said flanges, asset forth.. s
3. As a new article of manufacture, a metal file-base having upturned side flanges integral therewith, said flanges having recesses in their outer edge, and suitable partitions engaging within and beneath said flanges, as and for the purposes specified.
ALEXANDER DOM.
