UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
v JONATHAN W. OADWELL, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRT-IRONING BOARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,454, dated November 27, 1877; application filed April 25, 1877.
To all whom it may concern: 4
Be it known that I, JONATHAN W.OAD- WELL, of the city and county of Providence,
and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shirt-Ironing Boards; and I hereby declare that the followclamping-piece, by means of which the bosom of the shirt can be smoothly and evenly laid on the board and firmly held.
The second part of the invention consists in the arrangement, with the ironing-board, of an adjustable collar-band guide or former, which can be forced against the shirt-band, and thus shape the same, while the same also guides the iron and forms a convenient placeon which to set the heated iron.
The drawing shows the board in perspective.
(t represents the board proper. b I) are two bent springs secured to the board, so that they can be released and the board turned over.
0 is the clamp-piece. d is the collar-band former and iron-rest. It is shown cam-shaped, so as to readily adjust it to the different sizes of the bands, and is provided with a projecting tapering rim, and secured by the thumbscrew f. E E E are radial slits in which the thumb-screw can slide, so that the former can be firmly set against the band. The former (1 also answers as a convenient rest for the heated iron when not in use.
Instead of the cam-shaped outline, the former can be made so as to fit one or two specific sizes of shirt-bands, and one or more formers can be sold with each board. I
When in use the board is inserted in the shirt so that the upper end rests against the shoulders. clamp c is inserted between the springs b b, and the front pulled perfectly flat and even. The formerd is now pushed tightly. against the band and secured by the thumb-screw f, and the shirtfront can be easily ironed perfectly smooth and even, having a regular curved band, which will improve the appearance and fit of the shirt.
The ironed shirt is easily removed, and the arrangement saves much time and labor, pro ducing a better shirt-front than can be done without the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1 A shirt-ironing board provided with the adjustable bandformer cl, arranged to secure the upper end of the shirt front, and the springs b b, forming loops into which the lower part of the shirt can pass, arranged to secure the clamping-piece c to secure the lower part of the front, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with an ironing-board, of the band-former (1, arranged to form the band, guide the iron, and answer as a rest, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The adjustable shirt-band former, provided with a raised rim, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JONATHAN W. OADWELL.
