JOHN KRAFT, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT -IN APPARATUS FOR SHAPING PANTALOONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,666, dated May 25, 1875 application filed January 30, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN KRAFT, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machine for Finishing the Bottoms of Pantaloons; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
I11 the drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the smoothingiron. Fig. 4 is a side view of the iron, and Fig. 5 is a cross-section of the same.
The nature and object of this invention are to facilitate the forming and pressing of the bottoms of pant-aloons and consists in the construction of a machine for this purpose. Heretofore it has been done by hand, and is tedious and more or less unsatisfactory.
This machine is constructed as follows: An arm, A, is secured at one end by means of bolts a, or any other suitable device, to a table, B, and resting upon suitable supports 0. The arm A projects-say two feet, more or less beyond the supports 0, and is curved to correspond with the form to be given to the bottoms of the pantaloons, the edge being rounded and covered with a piece of cloth, D, as shown. An arm, A, corresponding in thickness to the arm A, and slightly curved on the bottom edge, is hinged to the end of said arm A, and may be held in close contact therewith by means of a strap, E, or hook or other convenient device, all substantially as shown.
The pantaloon-leg, being otherwise finished, is drawn over the arms A and A as ,far as desired, and the arm A released and allowed to drop in the leg of the pants, the pressure thereon being increased by a suitable spring, a, when a damp cloth is laid over the bottom of the pants, and a hot iron, F, applied to press and shrink it, the iron being moved back and forth until the operation is completed, as will be observed by reference to Figs. 3, 4, and 5. The iron to be used for this purpose is rounded and hollowed on the bottom to correspond with the curved and rounded edge of the arm A.
The machine may, if desired, be secured to the wall or partition, or directly upon a table, dispensing with the supports (J.
By means of this device the work is performed a great deal quicker than heretofore, and better and entirely uniform.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The arms A and A, in combination with the locking device E and spring a, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The iron F, in combination with the curved arm A, formed and adapted to oper ate in conjunction therewith, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention, I affix hereto my signature in presence-of two witnesses.
JOHN KRAFT.
