Description

MARTHA PARRY.
improvement in Puffing irons.
Patented Feb. 27, 1872.
Mi /p2 m UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTHA PARRY, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUFFlNG-IRONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,079, dated February 27, 1872; antedated February 9, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTHA PARRY, of the city of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stands for Ironing clothes, which I denominate a Putting-Iron, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 represents the outline of a top view of my invention. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the standard and ironing -head removed from the pedestal. Fig. 3 represents a central vertical section of the pedestal.
The object of my invention is to provide a suitable smoothing-iron for ironing puffs and ruffies in wearing apparel.
In the accompanying drawing, A denotes the pedestal, which is hollow, and provided with a tapering socket, B, into which the tapering portion a; of the standard 0 will be inserted when the device is in use. The head D, which is constructed as a fixed part of the standard 0, is of flattened oval form, which is best adapted for smoothing out puffs in garments; but any other desired shape may be used for the ironing-head. There may be a number of standards for each pedestal, and they may be made with heads of all the different forms which would be necessary for ironin g the different kinds of ornamental work connected with wearing apparel.
It has always been a labor of some difficulty to smooth out the puffs which are formed in garments, and no convenient device for the purpose has been devised or introduced to public use. My ironing-stand is especially designed for this purpose; and the ironing-head may be readily heated by setting it in an inverted position upon a stove or over a heater of any kind. The pedestal should be of castiron like the head D and its standard 0. The tapering form of the socket B, which corresponds with the lower end of the standard at w, is elongated sufficiently to constitute a firm support for the standard.
When used the pedestal will rest upon a table, and the standard will be of sufficient length to serve as a handle, by which to convey the ironing-head to and from the heater; and while one of these heads is in use, others of like construction, or of different forms, may be heatin g to be ready to replace the one in use.
In using my new utensil the garment to be smoothed or ironed is held by the hands of a person who will manipulate the same upon the head D of the stand, so as to perform the work of smoothing out the pufi's or ornamental parts of the garment which cannot be opened out and ironed by an ordinary sad-iron.
Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent The improved puffing-iron, as herein described, consisting of the pedestal A, provided with the tapering socket B, in combination with the removable standard 0, provided with the tapering end at and an ironing -head, D, in the manner described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of July, A. D. 1871.
Witnesses MARTHA PARRY.
