In the prior art stop-cocks two bore passageways are provided through the plug 2, one of which serves as a fluid discharge passageway from the graduated tube 5 and the other of which serves as a fluid feed passageway for refilling the said graduated tube 5. In such a type stop-cock the supply conduit had to be positioned on the bottom of the stop-cock adjacent the discharge conduit 8, thereby materially interfering with the use and manipulation of the said stop-cock. The present structure eliminates these disadvantages of such prior art stock-cocks thereby improving the burette of the self or automatically filling type. Whereas, as a specific embodiment, I have described a three-way stop-cock comprised of glass it is apparent that I am not to be limited thereby. Such a stop-cock constructed in accordance with the teachings of the present invention may be comprised of porcelain, metal, or other similar materials heretofore employed in the manufacture of stop cocks without departing essentially from the scope of the present invention.
Whereas, also as a specific embodiment, I have illustrated the combination of the stop-cock with a graduated tube of the burette type, it is also apparent that I am not to be limited thereby. Such a stop-cock as is herein described is adapted for wide commercial use with all types of containers wherein it is desired to transfer fluid from a supply source to the container and to, withdraw fluid from the container through the same stop-cock.
It is apparent therefore that many modifications and adaptations of the specific embodiment of the present invention may be made therein without departing essentially from the nature and scope thereof, but all such modifications and adaptations are contemplated as may fall within the scope of the following claims:-
What is claimed is:
l. A three-way stop-cock comprising a barrel having an inner surface conically tapered from one end of said barrel to the other, a pair of longitudinally spaced conduits on said barrel and opening there through to the inner conical surface thereof, a single conduit positioned on said barrel diametrically to said pair of conduits and having an opening there through diametrically alignedwith the opening of the lower of said pair of conduits, and a conically tapered plug member adapted to seat internally in said barrel, said plug member having a longitudinally extending groove in the surface thereof, said groove being adapted to bridge the openings of said pair of conduits, and a bore passageway extending diametrically there through from the lower end of said groove towards the upper end of said plug and opening at the opposite surface thereof at a point diametrically opposite the upper end of said groove.
2. A three-way stop-cock comprising a barrel section having a conically tapered inner surface, a pair of longitudinally spaced conduits on one side thereof opening through said barrel to the inner surface thereof, a single conduit on the diametrically opposite side of said barrel and opening through said barrel to the inner surface thereof, and a conically tapered plug member for said barrel, said plug member having a longitudinally extending groove in the surface thereof adapted to bridge the gap between the openings of the said pair of conduits on the inner surface of said barrel to provide a passageway there between along the said plug member, and having a bored passageway extending angular-1y and diametrically through the said plug member, from one end of the said groove at a point aligning it with one of the openings of said pair of conduits to a point on the plug surface adapting it to align with the opening of the other of said pair of conduits, when said plug is rotated about its axis approximately 180 degrees, the said single conduit being disposed on said barrel with respect to the said bored passageway to align with the passageway opening in the said groove when the said plug member is in its said rotated position.
3. In combination a three-way stop-cock of the type described and claimed in claim 1, and a container attached to the upper of said pair of conduits and positioned above the said stop-cock,
the lower of said pair of conduits being adapted to be connected to a source of fluid tobe supplied to said container.
4. A self-filling burette comprising in combination a three-way stop-cock of the type described and claimed in claim 1 and agraduated tube attached to the upper of said pair of conduits and positioned above the said stop-cock, the lower of said pair of conduits being adapted to be connected to a source of fluid to be supplied to said graduated tube.
