Be it known that I, ANTHoNIUs MARINUS vAN DoonN, a subject of thecQueen of the Netherlands, residing at Utrecht, "Netherlands, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Fountain Drawing Pens, of which the-following is a` specification. f n p This invention relates to fountain drawing pens of the type having a reservoir adapted to contain ink and a piece of piping for feeding the ink in the fountain to the nib of the pen.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved fountain drawing pen of this type allowing to form without any inconvenience both thin and thick lines until the fountain has been completely emptied.
According to this invention the end of the relatively wide ink feed pipe, which opens between the points of the members of the pen where the ink is required, is partly cut away on opposite sides in accordance with the form of the pointed portions of the members so as to form a fork between the prongs of which a loose wire or stylus, which eX- tends through the entire length of the feed pipe, is adapted to project.
The special construction of the end portion of the fee-d pipe-results in an automatic regulation of the ink feed when the members of the pen are forced together or allowed to separate to form thin or thick lines, respectively. As to the wire or stylus, this partly obstructs the mouth of the relatively wide feed pipe and renders the formation of incrustations of dry ink on the walls of said mouth practically impossible owing to its to and fro motion during the use of the pen, in addition to causing the ink to flow into the nib due its projection from the mouth of the feed pipe.
The nib of the pen is preferably adjust able by means of a screw carried by the comparatively thick wall of the ink feed pipe.
The annexed drawing shows, by way of example only, an embodiment of the invention, Fig. 1 being` a side elevational section, Fig. 2 a top view and F ig. 3 a similar view as Fig. 2 but with the top member swung at right angles to the bottom member.
The interior of the lower .end of the rese-rvoir or fountain 1 is provided with a screw thread engaged by the similarly screwthreaded portion of the ink feed pipe 2. Said feed pipe, which serves to closethe Areservoir 1, carries Athe pen members 11 and 12 and is provided with a central bore 3 eX- tending through its entire length.
The pipe 2 is reduced in steps towards its end and its end portion is tapered on the sides opposite the pen members s0 as to form afork as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The central bore 3 accommodates the stylusv 5 weighted by a button 6 on its top end in the reservoir 1. The mouth lof the bore 8' is adapted to be closed byy a screw-threaded pin 7 provided with a knob 8.
The thickest portion of the wall of the feed pipe is provided on opposite sides with screw-threaded holes receiving screws 9 and 10 acting as pivots for the members 11 and 12, which can be forced together and allowed to separate by thumb nuts 13 and 111 on screws 15, 16 on opposite sides of theA central portion of the pipe 2. Said nuts are provided with conical shoulders 17 and 18, respectively, adapted to enter into corresponding holes of the members 11 and 12, respectively, so as to accurately center said members after these have been swung open about their pivots, for instance, for cleaning purposes.
The upper face of the fee-d pipe 2 is provided with a conical recess 28L so that the stylus 5 can always easily enter into the bore 3.
It is not necessary for the in 7 to have a screw engagement with the eed pipe. It could, for instance, simply be tapered. Eve-n when the obturator 7, 8 is altogether dispensed with, the' pen would not leak.
What I claim is :v
1. In a fountain drawing pen of the class described, an ink reservoir, a feed pipe .fitted into the end of said reservoir and having acentral bore, a pair of pen members carried by the feed pipe, and said feed pipe having the discharge end thereof partly cut away on opposite sides to correspond to the form of the pointed portions of the pen members, anda stylus member arranged in the hollow bore of the feed pipe and having the point thereof projecting'through the cut away portions at. the end of the feed pipe and lying between the tips of said pen' members.
2. In a fountain drawing pen of the class described, a reservoir, a feed pipe fitting into the reservoir, pen members carried by the feed pipe, said feed pipe having a central feed bore and being obliquely cut away lying` between the points of the pen4 ymem-` bers, and astylus Wire-having a-f button at its inner end within the reservoir and its outer end being pointed an'dfA project-ing;
through the forked end of a feed pipe and lying close to the tip extremities'o'iv the-pen members.
