Abstract

<PICT:0476661/III/1> <PICT:0476661/III/2> A pipette or burette is fitted with mechanical means for very accurate adjustment of the liquid level. As shown in Fig. 2, this takes the form of a needle valve 2 or similar rapidly closing valve situated between the measuring tube 7 and the source of pressure and/or suction, which may be a rubber bulb 6. A valve 12 communicating with the atmosphere may be provided to permit renewed inflation or deflation of the bulb 6 or to control the dropping of liquid from the tube; it consists of a cap 14 screwing down upon the end of a tube having a groove 13 in its outer surface to afford an air passage. An alternative socket 9 normally closed by a plug 10 may be provided to enable the tube 7 to be fitted in an inverted position. Fig. 5 shows an alternative embodiment of the invention, in which the liquid level is controlled by a screw 22 bearing on a flexible diaphragm 20. A smaller similar diaphragm 19 may be fitted for fine adjustment both in this modification and in that previously described. For conducting multiple analyses a number of similar burettes may be connected in parallel to a single level-adjusting means, and in this case only one of the burettes need be graduated.
