Whatever may be the rapidity with which glasses can be set by means of putty, and the low cost of that operation, the difliculties of upkeep make that method of fixing glasses really 5 expensive, so that, all things being considered,
it is less expensive to have recourse to glass settings that do not require any putty.
Several solutions of the problem have already been proposed, which are generally satisfactory 10, from the viewpoint of water-tightness, but present several drawbacks, either because they are expensive and require sash irons having a special section, or because they involve the use of metallic bands having but a very low resistance,
which require a special care for setting them and do not avoid the annual upkeep.
The object of my invention is to provide a joint covering arrangement adapted to be used in connection with usual sash irons and char- '201acterized by the use of metallic bands capable of resisting the atmospheric agents, and sulficiently rigid for exerting upon the glass, when said bands are secured, by means of bolts, to the sash irons, a suitable clamping and to en- 251 sure perfect water-tightness, without using any putty, glue or similar body.
The arrangement according to my invention further has the advantage of being readily and quickly set. When prepared in advance in the 30.1 workshop, it does not require any work at the place where it is to be utilized.
I preferably make use, for the manufacture of the joint covering according to my invention, bands of zinc, aluminium, galvanized steel, or
35, any other metal or alloy capable of withstanding variations in the weather, easily bent, but having a rigidity and an elasticity sufficient for maintaining the glass by the tightening of the fixation bolts, without however creating any 401 danger of breaking under the effect of an excessive clamping.
A preferred embodiment of my invention will be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawing, given merely by way of 415" example, and in which:

Adverting to Fig. l, the steel T-shaped iron 1 of the ordinary type is provided with two adjacent lateral bands 2, 2, which are applied against the inner faces of the flanges of the iron and are curved in the shape. of gutters so as to form a support for the glasses and also collect and evacuate outwardly any water which might have penetrated under the glasses past the edges thereof. 7 Instead of being distinct as shown in Fig. 1, said bands might form a single piece passing over the Web of the iron. Band 3 acts as a cap covering the web of the iron and lateral bands 2, 2. It will be so bent that when it is fixed to the iron through bolts 5, its curved edges exert'a pressureupon glasses 4, 4 so as to hold them in position and, at the same time, to form, against them, a sufficiently efiicient joint. Ow-.- ing to the elasticity of band 3, its pressure upon glasses 4, i can never be exaggerated, whatever thetightening of" the bolts may be. This more or less strong tightening makes, it possible toadjust at will thepressure exerted by band 3 upon glasses 4-4, and the pressure exerted by the latter on lateral bands 2, 2, due to its shape and to its elasticity.
The fixation bolts 5 are preferably provided with Washers 6, 6, made of lead or any other material, for instance a plastic or elastic material. Said washers are intended to insure a water-tight joint between band 1 on the one hand, and the heads of the bolts and the nuts on the other hand.
It will be noted that the rolled edges of the bands insure a notable rigidity of said bands, and therefore make it possible to make them of very thin metals, which reduces the cost and the weight, while allowing the bands to be fitted exactly in position;
If the glasses are to be set upon sash irons 99, whose flanges already have their edges raised, in the shape of gutters, I may evidently dispense with lateral bands 2, 2.
While I have described what I deem to be a practical and efficient embodiment of my in- Q5 vention, it should be well understood that I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be changes made in the arrangement disposition and form of the parts without departing from the principle of my invention, in the case, I00 for instance of sash irons having another section than those shown in the drawing. Likewise the edges of band 3 might be given any suitable shape different from that shown in the drawing. They might, for instance, not be lQ5 rolled up when the nature and the thickness of the metal of the band ensure both the elasticity and the rigidity that are required.
What I claim is:
l. A device for securing a glass to a sectional I10 sash iron having a web and a flange substantially at right angles to said web, which comprises in combination, an elastic metallic band applied fiatwise against said web and bent substantially at right angles so as to be also applied flatwise against said flange, the edge of the portion of the band that is applied against said flange being curved so as to form aroll'ed part interposed between said flange and said glass and bearing tangentially against said glass. a, second elastic metallic band a portion of which overlaps said first mentioned band and the outer portion of which is bent so as tov extend obliquely to said web, the edge of' said outer portion being curved so as to form'a rolled edge located opposite the rolled edge of the first mentioned band, whereby the glass can be, elastically held between said two edges, and adjustable means for fixing said two bands tor said web.
7 2'; A device for securing agla-ss to a sectional sash iron having a web and" a flange substantially at right angles to said web, which comprises in combination, an elastic metallic band; applied flatwise against said web and bent substantially at right angles so as to be also applied fiatwise against said flange, the edge of the portion of the band that is applied against said flange being curved so as to forma rolled part interposed between saidflange and said glass and bearing tangentially against said glass, a second elastic metallic ba-nd' aportion of which overlaps said portion of the first mentioned band that is applied against said web and theouterportion of which is bent so as to extend obliquely to said web, the edge of said outer portion being curved so as to form a rollededge located opposite the rolled edge ofthe first mentioned band and adapted to bear tangentially against said glass, whereby the glass can be elastically held between said two edges, a bolt extending throughout said bands and said web, and a nut screwing on said bolt for adjustably fixing said two bands to the web of the sash iron.
3. A device for securing to an inverted T- shaped sash iron two' glasses extending on either side of the web of said iron, which comprises in combination, two lateral elastic metal- 110 bands applied flatwise against the sides of said webrespectively and bent substantially at right angles so as to be also applied flatwise against said flange on either side of said web respectively, the edge of the portion of each of said bands that is applied against said flange being rolled up so as to form a curved part interposed between said flange and said glass and bearing tangentially against said glass, and an elastic metallic band the central portion of which overlaps said bands and said web, the outer portions of the last mentioned band being bent so as to extend obliquely to saidweb, theedges of said outer portions being rolled up opposite the rolled edges of the two first merrtioned bands respectively and being adapted to bear tangentially against said glass, whereby the glass can be elastically held between said twoedges, and bolts extending throughout said web and said bands for adjustably securing these three bands tosaid web part of the last mentioned band to said weband applying its sides against the sides ofsaid web.
4-. A device according to claim 3 in which the bolts are provided with washers of a soft material for insuring water tightness.
