2 Claims.

This invention relates to improvements in ear rings, or ear ornaments, and has for its object to provide means for securely holding pendants or other ornaments to the ear lobe, without hurt to ear, or danger of loss of the ornament either through accident or theft.

A further object of the invention is to provide an ornament securing device for the ears, having means whereby an attempt to steal the ornament 19 from the wearer will more securely fasten the ornament to the ear.

Another object of the invention is to provide an ear clamp which need exert on the ear lobe a much less intense clamping pressure than is necessary for security where either a spring or screw supplies all of such pressure, as in standard practice.

A further object of the invention is to provide an ear clamp exerting very light pressure on the ear lobe, but by reason of its design and construction as shown, increases and decreases the clamp ing pressure coincidently as a greater or lesser weight, or pull away from the ear, is applied to the device.

Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the following specification, and in the several views in the drawing, in which 1 indcates my invention, which comprises a U-shaped clamp member 2, to one arm 3 of which is fixed a clamp basket of plate 4, adapted to hold an ornament 5, the rear surface 6 of which forms a pad for contact with one side of the ear lobe. An eye 7 may or may not be provided on the arm 3, to receive a pendant or the like 8. On thebifurcated end 9 of the other arm 10 is pivotally mounted a clamp lever 11, held normally raised by a spring 12, coiled around the pivot pin 13, and having an end bearing under the member 11, and the other end against the inner surface of the arm 10. The member 11 terminates at its inner end in a clamp jaw 14 which is preferably knurled, between which jaw and member 6, the lobe of a persons ear is adapted to project. A down pull upon any portion of the U-member or ornaments attached thereto will force the

6 and 14 more securely toward one another. However, by a slight upward push with the thumb of the user upon the extension lever end 15 of member 11, will cause the downward movement of the knurled jaw 14, thus releasing the ear lobe, and permitting the instantaneous removal of the device from the ear. A stop 16 on the terminal of arm 10 limits the upward movement of member 14, through stopping the down movement of end'l5.

Having described my invention, that which I claim to be new, and desire to procure by Letters Patent is:

1. An ear clamp consisting of a U-shaped member or similar convenient form, to one end of which is fixed a pad or terminal for contact with one side of the ear lobe, and to the other end of which is pivoted a lobe clamping member, the lobe engaging portion of which when in use normally lies 30 to 40 degrees below a line connecting its pivot with the center portion of the fixed pad, and a spring for the sole purpose of keeping the clamping member in operating contact with the ear lobe while being worn, whereby the weight of the device and/ or a pull in a direction away from the ear will cause the clamping pressure on the ear lobe to automatically tighten, proportionately to, and by virtue of such pull, and to release the additional clamping pressure as such additional strain is released.

2. An ear clamp consisting of a U-shaped member or similar convenient form, to one end of which is fixed a pad or terminal for contact with one side of the ear lobe, and to the other end. of which is pivoted a lobe clamping member, the lobe engaging portion of which when in use normally lies 30 to 40 degrees below a line connecting its pivot with the center portion of the fixed pad, and a spring for the sole purpose of keeping the clamping member in operating contact with the ear lobe while being worn, and a projection on the clamping member to permit the manual disengagement of said member from contact with the ear lobe, to effect the removal of the device from the car.
