STRAP WRENCH.

Application filed December formation. and combination of the wrench parts adapted to provide as extended, even and strong holding grip upon the perimeter of an article to eect a forcible turning of the same in a clockwise, or in a counterclockwise, direction, without inarring a highly nished and smooth surface'of the part thus engaged, and with a minimum liability to breakage when such part is formed of glass or like frangible or delicate material, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.

In the present structure, the article engaging means comprises a pliable strap or band l of fabric, leather or other suitablel Vmaterial, adapted to encircle and friction- .ally engage the perimeter of the article operated on, the frictional engagement being attained by a handle or lever 2 to which the f respective ends of the strap 1 are vattached in vseparated relation, and so that with an end of said lever in fulcrum engagement or 'bearing upon the article, a swing of the lever` will eifect the required frictional engagement of the strap 1 with the perimeter of the article to' either hold the same against forcible rotation, or to forcibly rotate the same, as desired. The general construction so far described is old and no claim to the same is herein made.

To the other end of che strap 1, an orificed plate or buckle 5 is attached, and to such end is formed With a receiving slot 7 for a loop 6 on said end of the strap. Said plate or buckle is also formed with a orifice 7 in right angle relation to the Slot 7 aforesaid, and adapted to engage around the shank of the lever 2 and have holding engagement therewith at a point removed from the fulcrum point of the lever and preferably by engagement in one of a series of notches 8 formed lalon the length of the lever or handle 2, as s own.

Where the' wrench is intended for use on section of tubingl or like connected articles,

the plate or buc es 5 has separable connection with the end of the strap '1 by means of an intermediate hook member 9 carried by the aforesaid loop 6 of the strap 1. With such construction the strap l disconnected from the lever 2, is made to encircle the article to be operated on, after which the strap is connected by the hook member 9 with the buckle 5 to complete the engagement of the parts with an article to be manipulated.

In the operation of the fpresent implement, an initial movement o the operating lever 2 tends to force the portion of the strap 1 beneath the shoe 3.irmly against the perimeter of the article operated on to firmly bind such portion or end of the strap in stationary relation to the shoe 3 and the article,: with a release of strain on the rivet lor other fastening means of the strap to the shoe. In the further movement of the oplever, the concave side of said plate aording' free shiftable contact with the Work engaging strap along the entire area of such concave side, and means for attaching an end of said strap to the convex side of the bearing plate to impose a bend inthe strap in a passage around an end of said late from the convex to the concave sides o the plate. v
