Application filed December 28, 1917. SerialNo. 209,241.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, LESSER Ro'r'rnn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have inventer certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. I
My invention relates broadlyto new and useful improvements in suspenders, more particularly to means for attaching the same to trousers or other articles of apparel tobe supported thereby.
The principal object of this invention is toprovide a novel simply constructed means for securing the attaching strap to the garment to be supported without the aid of the usual buttons carried by such garment. That is to say, my improved suspenders are adapted to be used on garments, such as trousers and the like, which have not been provided with buttons or from which the buttons have been removed.
\Vith this general objectin view the invention resides in certain novel features of construction which will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed and shown in the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 represents a side elevational view of a portion of a pair of suspenders con structed in accordance with my invention and attached to a fragment of a garment, and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The attaching device which forms a prin-' cipal part of my invention is preferably used in connection with suspenders, but it will be obvious as the descriptlon progresses that the same idea can be modified for use in' connection with other devices.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, it will be seen that the numeral 1 denotes an elastic band of a portion of a pair of suspenders, said band having the usual garment attaching strap 2 detachably attached thereto as at 3. As is customary the strap is connected with the band 1 midway its ends, and said ends engage the trousers T or the like. Normally said trousers are provided with buttons and the ends of the strap 2 with slits to receive the buttons.
In my invention each end of the strap 2 is bifurcated to thus form furcations 4 and 5 respectively, these furcations being disposed on opposite sides of theupper edge-portion of the garment as shownin Fig. '2'. Theattaching meanson each. end of the strap 12 is substantially the same, therefore in the following description, only the means on one end will be particularly described. v
The fur cation 5 has a stud 6 extending laterally from its inner face and is secured thereto preferably by the arrangement shown 7 in Fig. 2. One end of the shank of the stud is reduced as at 7 and disposed through an eyelet 8 in the furcation 5, after which it is headed as at 9. This will rigidly secure the stud in position. The portion of the eyelet which engages the shoulder formed by reducingsaid shank is of greater diameter than the main portion of the latter to provide an annular flange.
The other end of the stud is provided with an enlarged conical shaped head 10 having a sharp point so that the stud may readily force its way through the garment T. The intermediate portion of the shank of the studis of smaller diameter than the diameter of the head 10, and the distance between said head and the reduced portion 7, and consequently said annular flange of the eyelet is substantially the thickness of theordinary trousers adjacent the top edge thereof.
The portion carried by the furcation 4 which cooperates with the stud 6 consists of a socket 11, the inner wall portion of which is slit to procure a plurality of spring fingers whereby to permit the enlarged head to spring into or out of the same. The outer side of the socket 11 is closed by a disk-like cap 12 which is relatively flat. In order that the cap may not protrude to an unnecessary extent, an opening 1 3 is formed therein to receive thepoint of the head 10. Said point, however, does not extend beyond the outer face of the cap.
In the use of this device the stud 6 is forced through the fabric of the garment to be supported by the suspenders until the head 10 projects therefrom, whereupon the. furcation carrying the socket 11 is moved toward the other and the head snapped .into
' said socket. The frictional engagement between the walls of the socket and the head will hold the two furcations together and to the garment until the former are forcibly pulledapart as will be obvious from Fig. 2, When the head is engaged with the socket it i will be noted that the innerportions of the spring fingers thereof are disposed inwardly V of the garment immediately surrounding the stud receiving opening will be frictionally gripped between the same and said annular flange of the eyelet. The tearing strain on the opening is thus greatly relieved and it is unnecessary to provide the same with a reinforcing as is customary. This device will eliminate the necessity for providing trousers with suspender buttons, and inasmuch as attachment and detachment of my invention to or from a garment is very simple, the same will be found to'be very efficient and economical in use. f r
I claim: p In an article of the class described, a supporting device including an attaching strap, said strap being bifurcated, an attaching eyelet in one of the furcations of said strap, an elongated stud having one end reduced and disposed in the eyelet for securement to the furcation, the portion of the eyelet at the shoulder formed by reducing said stud being extended laterally of the latter to provide an annular flange, a conical, sharply pointed head on the other end of the stud, said head being of greater diameter than the intermediate portion of the shank of the stud, the point of the head being adapted to readily start an opening through a garment to be supported, the distance between the base of said head and said annular flange being substantially the thickness of said garment, and a socket carried by the other furcation, said socket having its inner portion split to procure spring fingers for engaging over the base of said head, said fingers being disposed inwardly of the head to grippingly engagethe garment between the same and said annular flange, the engagement being immediately around the opening formed by the head to relieve the tearing strain on the wall of said opening.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and State of Wisconsin;
LESSER ROTTER.
