1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in smoking pipes, the general object of the invention being to provide means whereby air can be admitted to an intermediate part of the bowl of 5 the pipe, when desired, thus avoiding the necessity of having to continually light the tobacco in the pipe, and giving a cooler smoke.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:--
Figure 1 is an elevation of the improved pipe. Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof, Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1, showing the valve ring in open position.
Figure 4 is a similar view, but showing the ring in closed position. As shown in these views, the bowl 1 of the pipe has a horizontally arranged row of holes 2'substantially midway its top and bottom and said holes open out into an external groove 3 formed in the bowl. A ring 4 is rotatably arranged in the groove and has holes 5 therein which will register with the. holes 2 when the ring is moved to a certain position and when the ring is in another position, the holes will be out of register so that no air can enter the holes The exterior of the ring is attractively marked so that it adds to the appearance of the pipe and by moving the ring to a position to cause the holes therein to register with the holes in the bowl, air can enter the bowl through said holes which will make the tobacco burn better, when the tobacco in the bowl is partly consumed and this arrangement avoids the nuisance of having to light the pipe a great number of times. It avoids waste of tobacco, as the tobacco is smoked right down to the bottom of the pipe. It also gives a cooler smoke.
It is thought from the foregoing description that theadvantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, pro vided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A smoking pipe of the class described comprising a bowl having an annular groove formed in its exterior wall intermediate the ends of the bowl, a ring rotatably arranged in said groove With its outer circumference flush with the adjacent exterior part of the bowl, said ring having a plurality of holes therein and said bowl having a plurality of transverse holes therein connecting the groove with the interior of the bowl, the holes in the ring registering with the holes in the bowl when the ring is moved to a certain position, the ring closing all the holes in the bowl when the ring is moved to another position.
