Description

1. W. Mc}\ULlFFE. TOBACCO PIPE APPLICATION'F ILED JULY 28. 1919.
1 70 02 I Pmnted Main. 8, 1921.
JOHN W. MOAULIFFE, OF PELHAM, NEW YORK.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 8, 1921.
Application filed July 28, 1919. Serial No. 313,960.
T all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN W. lWIoAU- Lirrn, a citizen of the United States, residing at town of Pelham, county of estchester. State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tobacco-Pipes. and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to produce a simple and novel pipe which may be made into a small compact package convenient to be carried around in the pocket, at the same time providing full tobacco capacity and without departing from standard practice in pipe construction excepting only a single simple addition.
The various features of novelty whereby my invention is characterized will hereinafter be pointed out with particularity in the claims; but, for a full understanding of" my invention and of its objects and advantages, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pipe arranged in accordance with a preferred form of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section in a plane containing the axis of the stem, showing the pipe made up into a package; and
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the pipe in the condition shown in Fig. 2, the cover for the compartment containing the stem members being omitted.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents a pipe bowl of any usual or suitable construction having a stem made of a plurality of parts detachably connected together and to the bowl. In the arrangement shown, the stem is made of two pieces, 2 and 3, of approximately equal length. Beside the bowl,
and preferably formed in the same block as the bowl, is a compartment, 4, large enough to receive the several. members of the stem. If desired, the compartment may be provided with a suitable closure, 5, which will prevent the stem members from falling out while at the same time closing the compartment against the entry of dirt where the pipe is carried around without being placed in a case. The compartment may be placed at any point with respect to the bowl, but it is preferably placed in front of the bowl, so that the axes of the compartment, the bowl and the stem lie in the same plane.
WVhile I have illustrated and described with particularity only a single preferred form of my invention, I do not desire to be limited to the exact structural details thus illustrated and described; but intend to cover all forms and arrangements which come within the terms employed in the deli-- nitions of my invention constituting the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A pipe comprising a bowl and a sectional stem detachably connected to the bowl, said bowl having a compartment of the proper size and shape to house the said sectional stem.
2. A pipe comprising a bowl and a sectional stem detachably connected to the bowl, said bowl having a compartment shaped to house the stem when the sections thereof are arranged side by side in the compartment.
3. A pipe comprising a bowl and sectional stem detachably connected to the bowl. said bowl having in its wall a vertical chamber opening out of the top of said wall, said chamber being of a size and shape to house the stem when the sections thereof 7 are disconnected from each other.
In testimony whereof, I sign this specification.
JOHN W. MoAULI'FFE.
