PIPE.
. Applicationnled March 23, 1323. Serial No. 627,140. 3
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID TAsnNAU, a citizen of the Republic of France, and 'i'esiding at Paris, Seine Department, No. 3 Rue Saint Sauveur, in the Republic of France, industrial, have invented a certainfnew and useful Pipe, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object a pipe of the class in which the large aperture for filling the bowl is normally secured to the mouthpiece, whilst the bottom of the bowl has a small orifice for the lighting and for the admission of the air of combustion.
In pipes of this class it usuallyhappens that by reason of the compactstat e of the tobacco which is strongly pressed into the bottom of the bowl, the central part of the tobacco is the only one to be entirely consumed whilst the portions adjacent the walls are not traversed by the air drawn in,
so that they become carbonized and blackened without burning.
This invention has for its object to obtain the lighting and combustion in pipes of this class in an entirely satisfactory manner.
For this purpose the lighting conduit in stead of opening directly into the bowl, ends in an intermediate chamber of larger diameter than that of the said conduit but smaller than the diameter of the bowl, so that'when filling the pipe, the tobacco is retained by the annular seat formed by the bottom of the bowl around the said chamber and is well pressed together only in this region; on the The appended drawing shews byway of example a constructionalform of pipe in accordance with the invention, in elevational view with parts in section. V
The said pipe is made in two parts; 1 indicates'the mouthpiece, and2 the'front part comprising the bowl 3, these two parts being secured together for example by a sleeve l whereon they are fitted or screwed. At the end of the front part2 is disposed a plug 5 which is,prefe1*ablymacle of metal and screwthreaded, having therein the draught.
conduit 6. vThe height of the said plug is less than the thickness of the wall, so that an empty space 7 is left between the plug and the chamber of the bowl 3.
In this manner, when the pipe is filled, the tobacco is brought against the annular surface 8 surrounding the chamber 7 and enters the latter but slightly; the whole of the central part of the mass remains permeable to air and can be lighted with facility. In the part 2 are formed the conduits 9 communicating with the annular surface 8, so that the air has a ready access to the portions of the tobacco which are the most strongly pressed and the air will thus provide for the combustion of the parts near the wall of the bowl.
By this arrangement one obtains a diminution of the effort of the required draught, by reason of the lighter pressing of the tobacco at the centre, and one realizes a total and regular combustion of the tobacco in successive layers. 1
Obviously, the bowl and the mouthpiece can be made in any desired shape and may be assembled by all suitable means. It is also feasible to vary the number and direction of the holes 9, and the size and shape of the plug like.
, Claims:
. 1. In a pipe having the form of a cigar, the combination ofa hollow bowl having at its inner end an aperture of larger diameter and at the outer end a draft conduit, and a mouth piece upon which .the said bowl is fitted by means of its large diameter aperture, the said draft conduit communicating with a chamber formed in the outer end of said bowl and whose diameter is intermediate between that of thehollow part of the bowl and that of the said draft conduit.
2. In a pipe having the form of a cigar, the combination of a hollow bowl having at its inner end an aperture of large diameter and at the outer end a draft conduit, a
mouth piece upon which the said bowl is fitted by means of its large diameter aperture, the said draft conduit communicating with a chamber formed in the outer end of said bowl and whose diameter is intermediate between. that of the hollow part of the bowl and that of the saiddraft conduit, an
5 and of the chamber 7 and the V annular seat adapted to surround thesaid intermediate chamber and interposed between the latter and the hollow part of the bowl, the saidouter end of the bowl being.
pierced with a plurality of lateral ducts.
communicating at one end with the atmosphere and at the other end with the annular seat in the interior of the bowl.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a smoking pipe having the form of a cigar and comprising a mouth piece and a hollow cylindrical bowl having one end d'etachably secured to the mouth piece, the other end of the bowl having a central passage and lateral conduits leading from the chamber of the bowl, the conduits leading to the inner end of the passage and the said passage being closed by an apertured plug, the length of which is less than the length of the passage, whereby a small chamber is formed at the end o-f the bowl, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name.
AVID TA BENAU.
