Abstract

13,949. Morgan, D. J. June 17. Tobacco pipes.-Tobacco pipes are arranged so that the tobacco may be lit and smoked in the ordinary manner, after which, the tobacco being well alight, the air-draught is caused to pass through the tobacco in the reverse direction, the smoke passing from the zone of combustion to the stem without passing through the tobacco. When the stem E is rotated until the hole f registers with the hole a<2>, communication between the stem and tube d' is cut off, and, the cover H being open, the tobacco pipe may be smoked in the ordinary way. The cover H is then closed down, the valve b<1> opened, and the stem E rotated so as to close the connexion f, a', the smoke then passing through the tubes D, d<1> to the mouthpiece through the apertures g, g<2>. In a modification, the tube D may be replaced by an arrangement comprising a water vessel in order that the smoke may be cooled as in hookah pipes. Fig. 2 shows an arrangement whereby the reversal of the draught is accomplished by operating the cover or cap H, projections h<1>, h<2> on the cover alternately operating spring-controlled valves K, L. According to the Provisional Specification, the top of the bowl is fitted with a fire-protector of suitable shape and material ; the cap is provided with holes which may be brought into coincidence with holes in the side of the bowl to admit air to mix with the smoke ; fixed or adjustable columns may be provided to facilitate the access of air to the burning tobacco : a rotary band may be fitted around the bowl and arranged to open and close the air-admission holes as required ; ash receptacles can be removably attached to the bowls of the pipes ; and filters may be fitted to various parts of the tobacco pipes.
