Description

. .T. D. PEOPLES. PORTABLE HAT AND CLOTHES-HOOKS.
No, 195,159, PatentedSept.1l,1877.
JhZEQ/G/ 0 5W5,
a /nay UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN D. PEOPLES, OF VENICE P. 0., PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE HAT AND CLOTHES HOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l95,l59, dated September 11, 1877; application filed August 1, 1877. 1
' it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 shows the hook ready for use. Fig. 2 shows it closed compactly for carrying in the pocket. Figs. 3 and 4. are, respectively,
top views of Figs. 1 and 2.
This invention relates to portable hat and clothes hooks for travelers; and consists in a pair of tongs or pivoted gripers held together by a spring, and provided with a swiveled hook, with or without sliding movement, whereby the article may be hung in a suitable position, all as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
The gripers A A are pivoted, and have the extensions a a resembling a pair of tongs. On the extensions a a. are sockets b b, in which rest the ends of a spring, .9, which forces the ends a a apart, and keeps the parts A A tightly pressed together. Passing through a lug, c, at one end of the extension a is a hook, d, which passes also through the socket b, and below it is provided with a stop or head. The hook dis pointed, and is swiveled in the lug c and socket d. It is free to slide in and out,
so as to be placed ready for use, as in Fig. 1, or packed together, as in Fig. 2, for the pocket, the hook end being buried in a recess in the end of extension a.
To use the hook, it is opened till the gripers A A have allowed some portion of the article to pass between them, and then allowed to close on it, after which the hook d is hung onto a projectionor bracket, lining, or hangin g, and turned till the article rests flat against the wall.
It may be used for hats, coats, bonnets, or any light articles or packages which cannot be properly disposed of in railway-cars or stages.
It is small and compact, and can be carried in the vest-pocket.
The pointed hook admits of penetrating curtains, hangings, or even wood, so that no difficnlty can be found in securing it anywhere.
A glance at the drawings will show exactly how the device is opened for use and closed for the pocket.
What I claim is The improved portable hat and clothes hook, consisting of pivoted tongs A a A a, spring 8, and swiveled hook d, with or without sliding movement, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of July, 1877.
JOHN D. PEOPLES.
