loClaims. (Cl. 101-215) This invention relates to printing machines of the hand operated type, the primary object of the invention being to provide a printing machine which will be small and compact and one which may be operated by persons unfamiliar with the art of printing, so that certain advertising matter such as pamphlets showing price lists or the like, may be readily printed.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of thisv character constructed in such. a way that the type used in forming the letters of the printed matter, may be positioned in the chase in the order in which letters are written in the formation of. words, ignoring all principles carried out in the printing art, and used in type setting.
A still. further object of the invention is to provide a printing machine using a transfer roller and a pressure roller, novel means being provided for automatically elevating the pressure roller from the transfer roller, upon the return movementof the transfer roller, after the machine has been operated to print, thereby preventing blurring of the printed matter transferred to the transfer roller. 1
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and ar'- rangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter describedand claimed,1it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed,

without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings in detail the reference character 5 designates the base of the printing-machine, which is formed with parallel track sections 6, onwhich the carriage 7 operates, the carriage 7 being provided with wheels 8, so that the carriage may slide readily from one end of the base operation.

During the operation of the machine, it is necessary for the pressure roller to be elevated, or raised out of contact with the transfer roller, with each reverse movement of the transfer roller, and with this end in view, pivoted segments 26 are provided, which pivoted segments are mounted on the plates 27 which are formed with wide inner ends 28. The pivot pins for the plates 2'7, and which are indicated by the reference character 29 secure the plates 27 to the ends of the transfer roller 15 and are so arranged with respect to the stops 30, that are also secured to the ends of the transfer roller, that the plates 27 may swing downwardly to positions as shown by Figure 5 of the drawings, where the pivoted segments will move inwardly to positions spaced from the periphery of the transfer roller.
This operation takes place while the paper on which the printing is to be transferred, is passing between the pressure roller and transfer roller, the paper passing from the transfer roller after the printing operation. 7
Upon reverse movement of the transfer roller, the uppermost pivoted segment 26, will engage the pressure roller, and further movement of the transfer roller will cause the pivoted segments to swing on their pivots. Since the stops 30 restrict movement of the plates beyond a predetermined point, it will be seen that the segments are extended beyond the periphery of the transfer roller 15, or to positions as shown by Figure 4, wherein the outer edges of the segments will contact with the pressure roller elevating the pressure roller to prevent the smearing of the printed matterwhich has been transferred from the type to the transfer roller.
Coiled'springs 30 are mounted between the bearing blocks 23 and cross bars 31, there being provided an adjusting screw 32- for adjusting the bearing blocks 23, thereby regulating the pressure. directed to the pressure roller, by the coiled springs '30. r
The inking of the type, is accomplished through the. distributing rollers 32, thatare mounted on the upstandingflanges 33, arranged at opposite sidesof the base.
These distributing rollersreceive ink from the ink roller 34 that operates above the rollers 32' in such a way that the peripheries of the rollers 32 contactwith the periphery of the inkroller 34. to the end that ink is transferred from the roller 34 to the distributing rollers 32.
. A handle 35 is secured at one end of the roller 34, so that the roller 34 may be operated to dis tribute the ink placedthereon, over therollers'32'. In the operation of: the device, the chase which has been set with type, is positioned on the carriage in a manner as-descr-ibed. The lever- 22' e is now swung forwardly in the direction of the arrow as indicated in- Figure 4 of the drawings, whereupon the transfer roller is moved in a counter-clockwise direction.
.The carriage together with the chase and the type, are moved to the right end of the machine with the result that the type prints on the transfer roller.
During this operation, the segments 26 contact with the. pressure roller, moving the same upwardly out of contact with the transfer'roller.
A sheet of paper to be printed is now fedbe tween thetransfer roller and pressureroller, and the lever 22 is reversed, causing printed matter to be transferred from the-roller 15 to the sheet.
It is obvious that upon this reverse movement of the lever 22, the segments 26 swing downwardly to positions as shown by Figure 5, allowing the pressure roller to move to contact with the transfer roller.
This operation is repeated, during the printing of each sheet.
I claim:
1. A printing machine comprising a base, a type supporting carriage movable longitudinally of the base, a transfer roller mounted on the base, a pressure roller operating above the transfer roller and contacting therewith for pressing a sheet to be printed into engagement with the transfer roller, means for automatically elevating the pressure roller during reverse movement of the transferroller, and means for operating the transfer roller.
2. A printing machine comprising a base, a type supporting carriage movable longitudinally of the base for moving type under the transfer rollerto transfer printed matter to the transfer roller, a pressure roller normally contacting with the transfer roller to press a sheet to be printed into engagement with the transfer roller, movable segments carried by the transfer roller for engaging the pressure roller to raise the pressure roller out of contact with the transfer roller during one movement of the transfer roller, and means for operating the transfer roller and carriage.
3. A printing machine comprising a base, a transfer roller mounted for rotary movement on the base, a type carriage movable longitudinally of the base, a pressure roller contacting with the transfer roller for pressing a sheet to be printed into engagement with the transfer roller, pivoted segments mounted on the transfer roller, means to hold the segments in their inactive positions during the printing operation, and means for holding the segments in an extended position to.

4. A printing machine comprising a base, a type supporting carriage movable longitudinally of the base, rack bars carried. by the carriage, a transfer roller mounted on the base and having teeth engaging the rackbars to move the carriage longitudinally of the base as the transfer roller is operated, inking rollers for inking type carried by the carriage, a pressure roller contacting with the transfer rollerfor pressing a sheet of paper into engagement with the transfer roller, and means carried by the transfer roller for engaging the pressure roller to elevate the pressure roller to move the pressure roller out of contact with the transfer roller duringone movement of the transfer roller.
5. A printing machine comprising a base, a transfer roller mounted for rotary movement on the base, a type carriage movable longitudinally of the base, and operating under the transfer roller to print onthe transfer roller, a pressure roller operating above the transfer roller for pressing a sheet to be printed into engagement with the transfer roller, pivoted segments on the transfer roller, pivoted plates on which the segments are mounted, means engaging the plates for restricting movement of the plates and segments during one movement of the transfer roller, said plates; adapted-to swing to move the segments below theperipheries of the transfer roller upon-movement of the transfer roller'in the opposite direction, said segments adapted to contact with thepressureroller-to elevate the pressure roller, and means for operating the transfer roller.
6. A printing machine comprising a base, a transfer roller mounted on the base, a type carriage mounted for movement longitudinally of the base, said carriage adapted to move under the transfer roller to transfer printed matter to the transfer roller, a pinion carried by the transferroller, a segment contacting with the pinion for rotating the pinion and transfer roller, a pres-' sure roller operating abovethe transfer roller and adapted to press a sheet to be printed into engagement with the transfer roller, and means controlled by the movement of the transfer roller for raising the pressure roller out of contact with the transfer roller during one movement of the transfer roller. 7

A printing machine comprising a base, a transfer roller mounted for rotary movement on the base, a type carriage movable longitudinally of the base and operating under the transfer roller to print on the transfer roller, a pressure roller operating above the transfer roller for pressing a sheet to be printed, into engagement with the transfer roller, and means controlled by the operation of the transfer roller for elevating the pressure roller out of contact with the transfer roller, for a predetermined period, during the rotation of the transfer roller.
8. A printing machine comprising a base, a rotary transfer roller mounted on the base, a type carriage movable longitudinally of the base and cooperating with the transfer roller in transferring printed matter onto the transfer roller, a vertically movable pressure roller for pressing a sheet onto the transfer roller, and means carried by the transfer roller and operated by the action of the transfer 'roller for elevating the pressure roller, at predetermined intervals.
9. A printing machine comprising a base, a transfer roller rotatably mounted on thebase, a type carriage movable under the transfer roller for transferring printed matter to the transfer roller, a pressure roller operating above the transfer roller and adapted to press a sheet to be printed, into engagement with the transfer roller, pivoted members on the transfer roller, means on the transfer roller for moving the pivoted members into engagement with the pressure roller, raising the pressure roller out of contact with the transfer roller, when the transfer roller is rotated in one direction, and said pivoted members adapted to move to their inactive positions, upon reverse movement of the transfer roller.
10. A printing machine comprising a base, a transfer roller rotatably mounted above the base, a type carriage movable over the base and engaged by the transfer roller in transferring printed matter from the type carriage to a sheet to be printed, a vertically movable pressure roller mounted above the transfer roller for pressing a sheet into engagement with the transfer roller, pivoted members on the transfer roller and adapted to engage the pressure roller when the transfer roller is rotated in one direction, and 5
