Be it known that I, Envm E. STRAWN, a citizen of the United States of America, rcsiding at Storm Lake, in the county of Buena Vista and State of Iowa, have in vented new and useful Improvements in Printing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in printing machines and has particular application to machines of this type for print- 'ing form letters such as are used in large business houses.

is my purpose to provide a printing machine by means of which a form letter may be printed, addressed, and a signature applied thereto, the means for addressing the letter being automatically movable sothat a new address may be applied to each letter printed. I

The invention also involves a machine for printing form letters whereby a letter may be printed," addressed and headed, an insert applied to the body of such letter and a signature attached to the letter, all in one operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construjctiong combination and arrangement of parts here scope of the appendedclaims.
In the accompanying. drawings there has been illustrated one preferred and practical embodiment of my invention, and in these drawings; Figure 1 is a view in side eleva tion of a printing machine constructed in accordance with the presentinvention. In carrying out the present invention, the paper upon which the letter is printed is fed over the form 6 between the same and the platen and from a roll 19 rotatably mounted in brackets 20 formed on the legsv 3 of the main frame, or detachably connected to such legs, as may be found desirable, at the rear of the form with respect to the direction of travel of the paper=during the printing operation. Subsequentto the printing of the body of the letter, the forward movement of the carriage is continued so that an addr'essand salutation may be applied to the letter from one of the address plates 27,- the salut-a-tion being carried by such plates as well as the name and address, as

In order to impart a positive movement to the paper a subsequent to the printing of the body of the letter and in the .movement of the printing drum 44 so that the'various inserts carried by such printing drum may be applied to the letter, the printing drum '44 in the present instance at its opposite ends is provided -with annular rings 56 which rings bear upon the side edges of the under surface of the paper a and act in conjunction with a feed roller 57 disposed preferably immediately above the drum 44, to feed the paper longitudinally of the machine. This roller 57, is preferably mounted 1 ,upon a shaft 58 journaled at its opposite extremities in blocks 59, 59 slidably mounted within brackets 60 carried by the upper edges of the longitudinal bars 1 of the main frame. between the lower surfaces of the blocks and the'bottom walls of the guideways of such blocks in the brackets 60 to place proper. tension upon the feed roll 57, set' screws 62 being arranged within the upper portions I of the brackets 60 to move the blocks 59 and the bodyof the letter so that the insert may be applied thereto.
When the signature has been afiixed tothe letter, the carriage and consequently the platen have reached their initial operating position and a clean portion of'the paper from the roll 19 is disposed above the ribbon 21 so that the above operation of printing may be repeated. As each letter has to have a new address, I have provided means operable automatically and from the,carriage to bring a new address plate into position and move the previous addressplate outof printing position. To this end, I have mounted upon one extremity of the shaft 31 of-the address drum a ratchet wheel 63 located adjacent to the lnner side ofone of the respective longitudinal bars 1 of the main frame and adapted to'be engaged by a dog 64 pivotally mounted upon the carriage 12 as at 65- and adapted to idleupon the ratchet Tension springs 61 are interposedwheel 63 in the forward movement of the carriage and to rotate such wheel f in the rearward movement of the carriage to bring a new name late into printing position .be--
